Chemistry 11:  Today we did Lab 4D, and the Questions and Follow-up Question are due on Friday.  We also did a minireview of Molarity Skills, but this is not due.

Wednesday, March 15, 2023

Science 8:  We started with a discussion about solution chemistry, using terms like concentrated, dilute, pure, diffusion, and osmosis.  We wrote notes on Materials moving through the membrane.   After reading pg 40 - 43 we completed pg 49 # 1-5, 8-12 in sentences.  In the second half, we started an experiment using dialysis tubing.   Every group had a unique challenge, and the final measurements will be made on Friday.  We also learned how cells are organized in living organisms (cell, tissue, organ, system, organism).   We created a table where we listed the 11 human body systems, described their function, and listed 3 organs for each system (pg 56 & 57 has a useful graphic).  Only pg 49 is due for Friday.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Science 8:  After adding more to our Cell Anatomy notes we watched this clip about cell structure.  We finished the microscopy lab by viewing human epithelial cells. Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  We took notes on Molar Concentration, then we read pgs 96 - 98 in Hebdon.  Due Thursday are Unit 5 Exercises # 59, 61 - 64.   Click here to see the assignment log.

Monday, March 13, 2023

Science 8:  After a short review, we read pg 31-34 and filled in a placemat.  We did pg 39 # 1-12 in sentences, and this is due Tuesday.   We finished with a quiz on microscope parts and photosynthesis/cellular respiration.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  We did # 46 (a,c,e,f,g,h), 22 (b,f) and 24 (a,b) today, and they are due Tuesday.  We also did a quiz on moles skills at the end of class.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Science 8:  We went over pg 31 # 12,4-6, then I collected it.  With a partner, we verbally did this microscope quiz.   We completed a microscope lab where we viewed and sketched human hair, moss anthers, and onion cells.

Chemistry 11:  I collected the WS titled "Putting it all Together", then we learned. how to calculate percent composition.   Unit 5 # 44 and 45 ( any 10 problems, total) is due Monday.  Lab 4B is not due Monday.

Thursday, March 9, 2023

Chemistry 12:  Unit 5 # 15f - 17 and 21 were collected today.  We did the WS titled "Putting It All Together".  In the final part, we learned how to write a conclusion, and on Friday we will write the conclusion for Lab 4D.   See the Lab Marking Guide and Sample Conclusion.

Wednesday, March 8, 2023

Science 8:  We did our Chemistry Test today, then we finished pg 31 # 1,2,4-6.  In the last 15 minutes we made a wet mount of a lower-case letter e from the classifieds of a newspaper.

Tuesday, March 7, 2023

Science 8:  Today we learned the anatomy of a microscope, as well as the care and handling instructions.  Read pgs 12-14 about microscops, and memorize the anatomy of a microscope.  We took notes on the structures in a plant cell.  We also read pgs 25-31 and did pg 31 # 1,2,4-6 in good quality point form.

Chemistry 11:  I collected Unit 5 Exercises # 11,12,15 (a-d) today.  We continued with more challenging moles problems, and we drew the moles heart map on our data booklets.  Due next class is 15f - 17, and 21 in Unit 5, as well as Lab 4B (Questions & Calculations and Follow-up Questions).

Monday, March 6, 2023

Science 8:  We took a quick look at the Assignment Log, and acknowledged that a lot of work has been done so far.  Well done!  We did a mini review together, then we did the Unit 1 Practice Test.  Our Chemistry unit test will be on Wednesday.  At the end we began learning about cell structure; our next unit is Biology (in grade 8 we learn cell structure and function as well as the immune system).  Click here to see the Assignment Log.

Chemistry 11:  Due Tuesday is Unit 5 # 11, 12, and 15 a-d .  Finish Lab 4B Follow up questions too.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Friday, March 3, 2023

Chemistry 11:  We finished the procedure for Lab 4B, then we did our Unit I test.  We spent the remainder of the class working on Lab 4B.  Only the Questions and Calculations # 1-5 are due Monday. Click here to see the Assignment Log.

Science 8:  We began with a short review of Cyclotrons, such as TRIUMF in Vancouver and the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland.  Next, we marked pg 212 # 3,5,10, 11 (from the hand-out).  We did the Pop Can lab, to practice skills with bunsen burners and calculating percentages.   We finished off by writing a Conclusion for our Pop Can Lab.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Thursday, March 2, 2023

Science 8:  Click here to see the assignment log.  We began with a short debrief if Lab 10-2, the Mini Distillation Lab.  We added a little to our notes on Atomic Structure.  We read pg 210 and 211 from a hand-out and did pg 212 # 3,5,10, and 11.  Both of these assignments are due Friday.  We learned how to light bunsen burners, and everyone demonstrated safe lighting to Xandrei, our TA. In the second half we made a poster showing the structure of an atom (a unique isotope was assigned to each student).  We finished by discussing the components that make up protons and neutrons, and how electrons are a fundamental particle and cannot be divided.  We watched this short clip about the Fundamental particles of the Universe.
