Science 10:  Today we spent about an hour on pg 424 (Section 13.2 from a hand-out).  You will be given about 15 minutes to complete this on Friday.  We also spent some time looking at water from Williamson's Lake, and identifying some zooplankton and phytoplankton.

Chemistry 11: After a short review, we spent some time on Lab 16D, the Solubility Lab, and the Solutions Practice Test.   We finished with the second lesson on Organic Chemistry:  Branched Alkanes. Organic WS #2 was started, but is not due Friday.  Solutions Unit Test on Friday.


Science 10 (56):  After a discussion about light-years we read 13.2 about Measuring Distances in Space (from a hand-out).  Do pg 424 # 1-8 and 10-17 in quality point form; this is due on Friday.   In the second half we looked at pond water and sketched 2 zooplankton, 2 phytoplankton, and 2 invertebrates.

Chemistry 12:  W learned about predicting spontaneous reactions by using the table of reduction potentials.  The Acid Base Test was written today as well.

Chemistry 11:  Solutions Test on Friday.  Today we did Lab 16D, and you will be given time to work on Questions 1-5 from the lab on Thursday.  Spend some time reviewing for the Friday unit test.

Chemistry 12:  We started with a mini-review of Hydrolysis.  We made 2 half cells, and connected them to make a full cell, which produced 0.8V of electromotive force.  After reading 5.1 and 5.2, we started on U5 # 1-5, but this is not due on Wednesday.  The final part of the class was spent on finishing the Acid Base practice test.

Science 10:  Triangulation WS.  We reviewed DNA today.

Science 10:  pg 394 # 2-11, 14, 19 from the Solar System hand-out was partly marked.  We looked at line spectra, and wrote notes on Spectrophotometers and the Electromagnetic Spectrum.  In the old Probe 9s we read 16.3 and did # 1-5 on pg 353.

Chemistry 11:  Today we worked on the Solutions Practice Test and we worked on the Solubility Lab.  Solubility test on Thursday.

Chemistry 12:  U5 # 3,4.  Finish the Acid Base Practice Test for Tuesday.  Acid -base test on Wednesday.


Friday, May 25

Science 10:  pg 394 # 2-11, 14, 19 from the Solar System hand-out.  Finish the Replacement Reactions Lab.

Chemistry 11:  Finish the Organic Chemistry WS #1 for Monday.  Test on Solutions on Tuesday.

Chemistry 12:  Today we took notes on Metal and Non-Metal Oxides, then we read 4.21.  The Acid-Base Practice test was given out today, and the Multiple Choice section is due on Monday.   Best practices would be to finish the whole practice test for Monday.

Chemistry 12:  After a short review of Buffers and insect bites, we spent time on Lab 20G and 20H.  We finished the Acid Base Skills Review (4.1 to 4.12) WS, which was handed in.  One more green review was provided for you if you were ready.   In the second half we learned about titration curves, took some notes, read 4.18, and did U4 # 125.  Our Test on Acids and Bases is going to happen next week, so please do some review.

Science 10: Today we read 12.4 and listed 3 important facts about each of the inner 8 planets.  We watched a video about a typical rocket that sends a probe to a distant planet.  We learned how to draw Free Body Diagrams, which are sketches that show the forces acting on an object.  We finished off the day with a Year End Review lab that allowed you to see a few Single Replacement and Double Replacement Reactions.  Only the planet facts and the Chem YER Lab is due on Friday.


Some grades for you, Chem 12 is not ready yet.

Science 10:  Read 12.4 and write 3 key facts about each of the planets on a piece of your own paper.  In the second half we did a Replacement Reaction year -end review lab.

Chemistry 11:  Both WS (Concentration of Ions, Precipitation Reactions) are due on Friday.  Test on Solution  is coming soon, early next week.

Chemistry 11:  Today we learned to use the dilution equation, which we use whenever we mix one solution with another.  Read pg 100-102 and do # 78-80, 82, 84, 85.  I marked the WS titled "Review of Molar Concentration, and a few of you need to complete it.

Chemistry 12:  After writing some notes on Buffers and seeing a buffer made and tested, we read section 4.19 and we did U4 # 131-134, 136, 139.

Science 10.  We started the Gravity  Lab today and will finish it on Wednesay/Thursday.  We also watched the last 20 minutes of "Giants".

Chemistry 11:  WS titled "Review of Molar Concentration".  We read 9.1 and 9.2 and took notes on Solutions.  We also made a saturated solution, which we will leave for 4 days before determining the concentration of the dissolved salt.

Chemistry 12:  We took note on Indicators, read section 4.17, then did U4 # 108 - 118.  about 30 minutes was given for Labs 20G (all questions part I to IV, Follow-up questions 1-3,5, no conclusion) and for Lab 20H (procedure part I and II only).

Science 10:  We went over the answers to pg 385.  We did a short review of the solar system and the earth-moon system.  We finished with the first half of a documentary called Giants, about the exploration of the 4 gas giants through the 80s and 90s.

Chemistry 11:  Today we did Lab 16A, and only the questions are due on Friday.  No Conclusion yet.

Science 10:  In the first half we read section 12.3 (Our Solar System) from the hand-out, and did pg 385 # 2-12 in sentences where appropriate (due Friday).   In the second half we did Lab 8.6 (Precipitates), and this is not due on Friday.  Be sure to go outdoors if the night is clear, and look for Venus toward the West.  Venus is the third brightest object  after the Sun and the Moon.

Science 10 P56:  Today we learned about the Earth - Moon System.  For Thursday complete pg 380 # 2-15 in sentences (where appropriate).  Label your diagrams and make them easy for the reader to understand.

Chemistry 11: Chemistry 11:  Unit 9 # 9-16, due Wednesday.

Chemistry 12:  Do the calculations for Lab 20H Part I and draw a graph as indicated.  Don't do every specified volume of NaOH - in class we did 0.00, 5.00, 10.00, 20.00. 24.00 and every second volume thereafter.  13 calculations in total.  Not due Thursday.

Chemistry 11:  Today we marked the Lewis Dot Structures, then did Lab 12B (Procedure 1,2 4 only).  A few of you need to finish the Lewis Dot Structures and show me on Monday.

Chemistry 12:  Today we learned about Hydrolysis.  Do U4 # 69, 71, and 65 to get some practice - this is due on Friday.  I did not check U4 # 58-64 today, but I will on Friday.  In the second half, we finished Part IV of Lab 20G.  The Lab is not due as I have your notebook.  Finish at least one side of the legal sized review of Acid Base Chemistry that I gave you last week.

Science 10:  Today we spent time finishing the Energy Practice Test.  This is due on Friday, the day all Science 10 Students write their Energy Test.  We also did Lab 10B (from a Hand-out)with a partner,  which involves creating a model the Solar System.  Make sure you do Discussion Question s# 1-3 in fine sentences (Due Monday).  No home work for Friday, except to study all that you have learned since the Chemistry Unit Test.

Science 10:  Today I collected the WS on Mass-Energy Conversions, which was due at the start of class.   After a mini review, we wrote some notes about Nuclear Fission, read 11.2, and did pg 317 # 2-5, 7,8,10-12.  In the second half we worked on the Lap Tops in the Library and completed the Mini Article on the Energy Topic you chose over 2 weeks ago.  Both pg 317 and the Mini-Article (save as a PDF and share it with ggale@sd19.bc.ca)  are due on Monday.

Chemistry 11:  Ms. Wallach gave us the low-down on the Numeracy exam that will happen in the last week of June.  We reminisced about Bohr Diagrams and drew them for the first 20 Elements.  After break we did our Reactions Unit Test.  I collected the Reactions Unit Practice test too.  No homework is due Monday, you will be given a little class time to finish U8 # 13-19, 22.

Chemistry 12:  Today we did lab 20G Parts I and II.  Nice work!  We finished with a quiz on Unit 4 49 - 57.   No homework from me, but some review might be appropriate at this point.


Tuesday, May 1

Chemistry 11:  Test on the Reactions Unit on Thursday (everything since April 5).  Have your practice test done for Thursday.  We started the Atomic Theory Unit, by reading pg 139-147 and doing Unit 8 # 13-19, 22, but this is not due until Monday.  I collected Lab 6D today.

Chemistry 12:  After a short review of Ka, Kb, and Kw, we took notes on pH and pOH.  We read section 4.11 and did Unit 4 # 49-57 as well as Procedure step # 1 on pg 254 in the Heath Lab Manual.  We are about half through the Acid & Base Unit.

Science 10:  We marked pg 296 with a key and watched a video on Carbon Dating - click here to see it.  We then learned about Einstein's famous equation (E=mc2) and used it on a number of problems on the "Mass Energy Conversion" WS.  We finished with a homework quiz on pg 296.
