Chemistry 11:  The Moles Practice Test was due today, and it was checked.  We spent some time looking at the answer key, then we wrote notes on Chemical Reactions and read sections 6.1 and 6.2.
We started Unit VI # 1-6, but this is not due Wednesday.  Our Moles unit test will be tomorrow, so spend some time preparing for this.

Science 10:  Today we learned the basics of balancing chemical reaction equations.  We read pg 134 and started pg 135 # 1-8 in point form.  More time will be given for this next class.

Chemistry 11:  Today we reviewed how to study for a test in a course like Chemistry 11, because we are having a Moles test on Halloween Wednesday.  Determine which part of the text to review, which labs are important, and make a list of vocab and skills required.  Practice the skills you have learned, starting with ones that you know are challenging for you.  We also did the Moles practice test, which is due on Tuesday.  Below is a page of notes that outlines what we have learned about in the Moles Unit.

Science 10:  We began with a review of Lewis Dot Structures and names/formulas of ionic compounds.  We also learned how to write formula equations for chemical reactions, read Topic 2.2 Concept 4, and did the WS titled "Writing Reaction Equations" (due Tuesday).

Friday, October 26, 2018

Chemistry 11:  After a practice quiz on Aqueous solution topics, we learned how to use the dilution equation found on pg 101 in Hebdon.  Unit V # 97 was completed to try out the new equation.  We finished off by by having everyone make a dilution of either 5.0 M NiCl2 or 2.5 M MnCl2 in order to created a less concentrated stock solution.

Science 10:  We did a practice quiz on Names and Formulas of Ionic Compounds.  We also took notes on Bonding in Covalent compounds and drew 10 Lewis Dot Structures (H2O, F2, CF4, C2H6, C3H8, H2, NH3, SO42-, O2, H2S).  From pg 192 in the old Science Probe 10 we learned how to name Covalent Compounds, which are different than Ionic Compounds.  On Monday, we will have a quiz on naming and writing formulas of Ionic compounds.

Thursday, October 25, 2018

Chemistry 11:  We started with a short review of molar concentration, including two practice problems.  We did Unit V # 95 and 99, which is due Friday.  With a partner each of us made a Standard Solution (a solution with a carefully known concentration), and created a lab report that outlined the procedure involved.    Your lab report needs to have the usual:  Title, Purpose, Materials (list these), Procedure (write these clearly), and a Data section where you can show your mass calculation.  At the end of our class we learned about dilutions, and Unit V # 78-82 was assigned and will be due tomorrow.   We will have a Moles Unit Test on Halloween.

Science 10:

Science 10 (P56): After a short lesson on Polyatomic Ions, we tried 5 names and 5 formulas of ionic compounds that contain these ions.  We also did pg 191 #5 from the old Probe 10, and self checked the answers with an answer key.  We spent the second half doing Lab 8.1 - only the WS is required for analysis, not the Questions below the Procedure.  We finished with part II of the experiment with the falling meter stick.   There will be a Quiz on Names and Formulas of Ionic compounds on Friday.  We watched a short video on Copper at the end.

Tuesday, October 23

Chemistry 11:  Today we took notes on Molar Concentration.  We read pg 96-98 and did Exercises # 59 and 61-64, which is due on Thursday.  Lab 4D is also due on Thursday.

Science 10:  I collected pg 174 # 1-12 from the (old Probe 10 Text) today.  We started with a little experiment to gather data on reaction time.  Expect this again next class.  We spent some time on the techniques for writing formulas and naming ionic compounds, and we did 10 for practice.  At the end, we read pg 123 to 124.

Wednesday, October 17, 2018

Science 10 P56:  We started by reviewing the two categories of compounds, Covalent and Ionic.  After reading pg 120 to 122, we made the ionic compound MgO by burning Mg in air.  We took notes on Ionic compounds, then did pg 174 # 1-12 in the old Science Probe 10 text.  These are due Monday.  Everyone was given a print-out that summarized the work I have assessed so far.

Tuesday, October 16, 2018

Chemistry 11:  Today we did lab 4D.  Finish the Questions for Thursday.   I will give you time for the Follow-up Questions on Thursday.

Science 10: In Period 56 we looked at Ionic and Covalent Compounds, and took some notes on each.  Make sure that # 1-9 on pg 100 is finished - I will give you answers on the Double Block.  In Period 78 we went to the MADD presentation.

Monday, October 15th.

Chemistry 11:  After a short review of finding Empirical Formula and Percent composition, we did the WS titled "Determining Empirical Formula"  and we prepared Lab 4D.  The WS is due on Tuesday.

Science 10:  Today, we did pg 100 # 1-9 in quality point form, then we watched a little more of "What Darwin Never Knew".

Friday, October 12, 2018

Science 10:  After a short review of the language of Recombinant DNA, we read Topic 1.4 Concept 2.  We made a placemat (on a new sheet of looseleaf, create 4 equal sections on front and back, and number the boxes 1-8). In each box, take brief notes on one of the following Biotechnologies:  Artificial Insemination, In Vitro Fertilization, Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection, Gene Therapy, Testing of Food Crop Plants, and Invasive Species Detection.  There will be 2 blank boxes:).  Your Biotechnology placemat is due Monday.

Chemistry 11:  Lab 4B and Unit V #44 & 45 (any 12 problems) were collected today.  We took notes on Finding the Empirical Formula.   We did Unit V # 46 (problems a,c,e,f, h,k), as well as any 6 problems (total) from Unit V # 22,24,44,45.

Grade 8 Volleyball:  Ask permission to leave class at 12:50 on Monday.  We will get on the bus at 1:00 and play in Enderby.  We should be home by 8:30.

Thursday, October 11, 2018

Science 10:  Today we took notes on DNA Manipulation, then we read Topic 1.4 Concept 1.  For an assignment, you asked to create an assignment which included 2 MC problems, 3 fill in the blank statements, and 2 Written response problems (explain why..., describe the difference between..., list the...  calculate.... ) There must be at least one diagram in your assignment, and an answer key on a separate page.  We also watched a little of "What Darwin Never Knew".  At the end we observed some elements, and wrote down some data on each.
