Science 10:    I collected the Calorimetry Lab today.  Today we spent the 2nd of 2 classes researching a topic of your choice that shows your learning about local and/or global impacts of energy transformations from technologies.

Topic Choices include:   hydro electric dams, wind farms, biofuel production, natural gas production, power grids, fossil fuel pipelines, solar generating stations, coal fired electricity generation, geothermal heating, agriculture, liquid fossil fuels, glaciers, nuclear electrical stations, fuel cells, electric powered vehicles... ask me if you are interested in some other energy-related topic.

Impacts could be on the land, water or air in the area where the energy is extracted, processed, or used.  The impacts could also be on the people or other organisms that live near these places.  Be specific about the places and countries you are learning about.

Today is a learning day.  Take notes in a new Word Document to record your learning. Save images that demonstrate key ideas.   Give your notes a descriptive file name (eg.  Solar boiler Notes Smith Science 10) and save them to your OneDrive.  Share the file with Mr. Gale (ggale@sd19.bc.ca) by the end of today's class.

Earth Science  11:  Today we reviewed Plate Tectonic with a short crossword.  We then saw how Wood Metal demonstrates melting point depression, an important notion in the production of magma that eventually forms Volcanos.  After a short discussion about viscosity, we watched a short doc on Mt. Science 10:  In the first half, we did a calorimetry lab to determine the amount of chemical energy stored in a walnut.  My room smells quite bad, thanks to that.  All of the discussion questions are due on Friday.  We started a research project in the second half:

Show that you know some local and global impacts of energy transformations from technologies.

What you could learn about:   hydro electric dams, wind farms, biofuel production, natural gas production, power grids, fossil fuel pipelines, solar generating stations, coal fired electricity generation, geothermal heating, world food production, liquid fossil fuels, glaciers, nuclear electrical stations, fuel cells... ask me if you are interested in some other energy-related topic.

Impacts could be on the land, water or air in the area where the energy is extracted, processed, or used.  The impacts could also be on the people or other organisms that live near these places.  Be specific about the places you are learning about.

Today is a learning day only.  Take notes in a new Word Document to record your learning. Later we will find a way for you to present your information.

Earth Science 11:  We spent time working on the Cloud powerpoint assignment today.  Make an 11 slide Powerpoint.  After the title slide, make 10 slides with different cloud types.  On each, include a photo, the Cloud name, and one or two notes about the cloud.  To share it with your instructor, save the Powerpoint to your "One Drive" and use a descriptive file name.  In your One Drive, right click the file and share.  Type ggale in the recipient line, and it will fill in the rest.

We learned about Global Weather patterns, Hadley cells, and the Coriolus Effect, that steers moving air to the right.  After a little reading, we created a mini assignment with 3 multiple choice questions on Global weather.   This will be due on Friday.   We finished with a Documentary on Weather.  Finally, a quiz on the Orographic (Mountain) Effect.
