District Authority Scholarship Display Day - please review your SD19 e-mail, there is a note from me if you applied for this scholarship.  A response is required.  More information is coming soon.

Science 10:  I am enjoying looking in all your Class Notebooks at your hard work.  Each day I look in your Hand In section for any of your new work, then I review it, then I write you an email about it.  If you are handing in work to other places, please cut and paste the work into a fresh digital page in your Hand In section of your Class Notebook.  Lately,  I have needed to use OneNote app instead of using the Notebook within Teams.  Teams is just too slow.  If you are not getting email notes from me, I am not seeing your work.  Avoid the Assignments top and side tabs in Teams.

Science 10:

Thanks for attending our first meeting yesterday.  We discussed these items:

-Keep working!  Keep developing your skills.  3 hours per week of focused learning for Science 10 is a good amount.
-This blog is the key source for basic information.  It will direct you to Teams, where you can find our course materials in your Class Notebook.  Instructions for Astronomy started on April 6th, and will end on April 30th.
-Make a good space for yourself somewhere in your house where you can focus and work efficiently.  Earplugs are amazing for providing a quiet space, anywhere!
-Your course mark will be determined from your Term 3 grades (visible on myed), your participation in this new online learning since Spring Break, and the quality of your communication (emails, discussion posts, phone calls, etc).  I admit, I am not quite sure how to assess your knowledge yet, I am working on that.

Astronomy officially ends on April 30.  Click here to see the Astronomy Unit Outline.

Next week, we will pick up with the Genetics Unit, and Teams lessons will happen twice weekly.  Please email Mr. Gale with a preference for when you would to have our twice weekly meetings.

Capstone 12:

If you haven't spoken to me (or your counsellor) about Capstone 12 please contact me at the school between 9:00 and 3:30.  Most of you are working on presentations and will do a practice round in the last week of April or first week of May.  Contact me if you have any questions or difficulties with your Capstone project.

Science 10:  Nice work!  I have been reviewing more and more completed coursework from you all.  Keep it up:)

First Online Science 10 Meeting!  Tomorrow - Wednesday, April 22nd at 2:00.  You will need paper and a pen/pencil for a little review.   At 1:50, go on Microsoft Teams, choose the left tab Calendar, then find our Meeting, then join it.  I am looking forward to seeing you all.

If you have not yet done so, scroll back through the blog to April 6th, this is where instructions for Science 10 begin.

Grade 12 Scholarships:  It has just been decided that those applying for the District Dogwood Scholarship will be setting up a presentation/display table in the Gym on the morning of Wednesday, May 6th.  More details will be available soon.

Capstone 12:  Thanks for continuing to complete your Capstone according to the instructions on the Grad Homepage.  Of course, the presentation meeting at RSS that was scheduled is cancelled.  Mr. Gale is contacting each Grad by phone to determine how best to "present" your Capstone, so expect a call if you have not received one yet.

Science 10:  Thanks for completing the Astronomy Tasks and handing them into your Class Notebook, "Hand In" section.  I am really enjoying seeing all your efforts.

Its important for your skills that you spend time, we hope about 3 hours each day, completing school work that is assigned to you by your instructors.  There will be no Term 3 report card, but at the end of the school year all instructors will issue a Course Grade as they usually do.  Your Course Grade will be comprised of two pieces:
  • evaluation up to Spring Break
  • participation to the best of your ability since Spring Break has ended.
Log onto myed to see your grades up to Spring Break.
Keep working steadily through the Science 10 material as it becomes available.  Three hours of focused, mindful science work weekly is appropriate.  Follow the instructions on my Blog, beginning on April 6th, 2020.  Be sure to phone me at the school (between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm) or contact me by email (ggale@sd19.bc.ca) if you are having troubles of any sort, or just want to check in:)

The Constellation Orion is leaving!  Its so low in the West (MacPerson is blocking it) and the daylight is lasting longer each evening.  Better get out to see tonight if you haven't already, or to say goodby until next fall.

Capstone 12:  I made phone calls yesterday to check in with Grade 12s.  No Capstone "Microsoft Teams"  presentation meetings have been scheduled yet but email me if you are ready to present.  It would be helpful if you emailed a PDF copy of your resume and cover letter well before your presentation meeting.

Science 10:  Hi Everyone!  Hope your long weekend was ok, and that you were outside a least a little in the evenings to see a super bright Venus and possibly the last of Orion until next fall.  Looks like another week of clear skies, and I recommend Astronomy Task 4 to everyone, which involves a little work inside with your textbook, and a little work outside in the dark.  At least 2 m from the nearest human, mind you:)

Last week I posted Astronomy Tasks 1 to 4, and an Astronomy Outline.  This week I will post Tasks 5-8.  By the end this week, April 17th, everyone should be done 4 tasks, and it is your choice as to which 4 tasks it is.  I am shooting for about 3 hours of Science work per week.

If you are just getting started with Science 10, make sure you start from the start!   Go back to the Monday, April 6th blog post and work your way through last week to ensure you are getting all the right information.  Call me at the school from 9:00 till 2:50 (250-837-2173), or email me (ggale@sd19.bc.ca) , or call me on Teams.

I will keep posting instructions here, and the course content can be found in Teams (RSS Science 10 - Gale, General Channel, Class Notebook top tab, Content Library Section, Astronomy Section).

Grade 12 Career-Life Capstone . Please be working on your Capstone project as outlined on the Grad Homepage on the RSS website.  I will be contacting each of you by phone to determine when/how we will do your Capstone meeting.

Grade 12 Scholarships:  Still working on the format for the District Dogwood scholarship presentation, so no news yet.

Careers 9 and 10:  If you have already had some of these courses delivered to you before Spring Break, ensure that you have completed all the tasks.  Scroll back through my Blog to see the tasks that were assigned, and finish them by April 17, the end of Term 3.  Most work is done online through myBlueprint.ca, and you can omit any of the paper assignments.  I will be looking through your myBlueprint portfolio to evaluate your work.   If you have not yet done any Careers, please check back with this blog on Monday, April 20th for information on how to get started..

Science 10:  Its nearly time to get going on some Science 10 skills and topics!  Yeah!  Mr. Kenyon thinks that you will be getting your locker contents, including  your Science 10 Connections Textbook, mid to late next week, so we will find some other way to learn some Science 10 in the meantime.

What to do now for Science 10:

1)  Install the Teams app on your device, log in using your regular school username/password, and open up the Teams app.

2) In the Teams App, click the left tab Teams to see all your Teams.  Click your Science 10 team.  Spend a few minutes roaming around Teams to see what is in there.

3)  Watch this video from your Streams tab in 365, where Mr. Boggild explains some basics about using Teams and Notebook.  Back in Teams, click your Science 10 team.  Click on the "Discussion" channel and write a short note to me indicating that you are ready for the next part.  I am working hard to create a program for you, I will be rolling it out in pieces.

4) Attempt to have some sort of work space created in your house where you can sit and focus.  Maybe its your bedroom, with a little table that you can work on and a stool to sit on.  Maybe its a quiet corner in your lower floor.  Maybe your house is lively and a set of earplugs will give you a quiet work space:)

5) Contact me if any of the 4 steps above are causing you grief - ggale@sd19.bc.ca.

6)  We are going to work on the Astronomy Unit first, we will finish off the Biology afterward.   If it is clear tonight, you will need to step outside the front door at about 7:00 pm and look toward MacPherson, where you will see a very bright Venus.  Try the Stellarium website to preview this if you want:  https://stellarium-web.org

And that, is your Science lesson for today:)

Grade 12 Scholarship Applicants   If you applied for the District/Authority Scholarship, please know that we are working on a way to complete the process for this particular award .  I will contact each of you to give you more information.
