Chemistry 11:  We did Lab 16A in the first half and spent time on Year End Review in the second half.  Everyone was given a Chemical Reactions Year End Review WS, and when it is complete you can get a review assignment from another unit of your choosing.  The Organic Test will be tomorrow, Tuesday.  Your Final Exam will be Thursday - please don't forget that you will be given a fresh data booklet for Thursday's final exam so if you have helpful notes written on your current data booklet, they will need to be studied and committed to memory.

 Chemistry 11:  We started with a lesson on Ester Formation, then made and completed a homemade worksheet with 5 different reactions.  Esters make many flavours in fruits:  check out this graphic of different esters and their acid & alcohol components.   Lab 16A was prepared for Monday, then time was given for the Practice Final and the Organic Practice Test.  In the second half we took notes on the conductivity in solutions.  We read sections 9.1 and 9.2, then did Unit 9 # 6-8.

Chemistry 11:  After a short lesson on Alcohols, we read page 233 and did Unit 10 # 32 and 33.  A worksheet on Alcohols followed, then a video on How Its Made: Wine.  In the second half, we found the concentration of each ion in ionic solutions.  A WS titled "Concentration of Ions" is due on Thursday too.

Chemistry 11:  We started with a lesson on cis and trans isomers, click here to see the notes we added to last day's notes.  WS #6 was completed next.  After the break we started with a video that showed how natural gas is made into plastic.  We learned about Aromatics, a class of compounds with rings that have alternating single and double bonds.   Time was given to read sections 10.4 and 10.5 and to complete # 30 & 31, as well as the odd letters (a,c,e,g...) from unit 10 # 22-28.  The final 15 minutes was spent completing a quiz on alkanes, alkenes, and haloalkanes.

 Chemistry 11: We began with our Atomic Theory Test, followed by a little time to finish the Titration Calculations WS.  In the second half we learned about Haloalkanes, as well as organic compounds containing double and triple bonds.  Due Tuesday is Unit 10 # 17-19, and WS #4.

 Chemistry 11:  We learned about cyclic alkanes and did WS #3.  Time was given for the completion of the Atomic Theory Practice test - our Unit Test will be on Monday morning.  In the second half of our class we reviewed Titrations, and did the Titrations WS.  A new idea introduced with the worksheet is that scientists cannot arbitrarily exclude data once it has been measured.  In our class, we will use the 10% rule and say that if one trial in an experiment is more than 10% different than the rest of the trials that we can exclude that data.  At the end we learned about Haloalkanes, and did Unit 10 # 17-19. 

Chemistry 11:  In the first half we finished our business letters, addressed to me, asking to avoid writing a conclusion for Lab 6D.   In the second half, we practiced more names and structures of branched alkanes and worked on the Atomic Theory Practice Test.   Due Friday is Unit 10 # 5-9 (make a sketch for each problems, so that you do not write in your text.

 

Chemistry 11:  We started off by going over the Organic WS #1.  We took notes on Branched Alkanes, and did Organic WS #2.  Reading sections 10.1 and 10.2 are terrific ways to learn or review these topics.  The second half was spent finishing Lab 6D, where we did the Questions and the Follow-up Questions.   Instead of writing a conclusion, write a business style letter addressed to Mr. Gale explaining why we should not write a conclusion for lab 6D.  Follow the business letter format given by this example.  Keep it concise enough to keep on one page.

 Chemistry 11:  We wrote notes on our Lab 11A graphs, to explain why atoms get smaller in size as one goes from left to right across a period on a Periodic Table.  We also took notes on the Modern Periodic Table - click here to see them.  Due Friday is Unit 8 # 26-28 (any 15 total) and Unit 8 # 31 - 39.  We also spent time on our Dead Sea Lab.  More time will be given for Lab 11A Part III.

 Chemistry 11:  Today we learned about electron Configuration and did the procedure only for Lab 11A, where we learned about atomic radius and ionization energy.  We Viewed some line spectra for N, Kr, Ne and Hg.  15 minutes was spent watching Brian Cox speaking at a TED conference.  We finished off by creating a mini Dead Sea, so that we could find the concentration of NaCl in the dead sea.

 Chemistry 11:  We began with an announcement and moment of silence to reflect on recent discoveries at the former Kamloops residential school.  This lead to a conversation about how learning can contribute to understanding and to making the lives of others better.  Reading and listening to experts is a terrific way to learn, and its important to use critical thinking throughout all learning and always work hard to find truthful resources.  Truth is a regular theme in our coursework as well.  We spoke about listening to Murray Sinclair, who's speeches can easily be found on line.  Try this one:  Murray Sinclair:  "The Truth is hard, Reconciliation is harder". 

Due on Wednesday is Lab 20C as well as Unit 8 # 13-19 adn 22..
