Science 9:  We went over pg 344 # 1-7 first, then spent some time reviewing Chemistry topics.  We took notes on Electrical Energy, and watched a clip on Solar Farming and on Wind Turbines.  In the second half we completed the Practice Final Exam, (click here to see the key for this).  Tomorrow you will write your Final Exam for Science 9.  Ensure that you have a calculator, pencil and eraser.  I will collect the contents of your binder and I will check it for completeness and for roughly chronological order.

Science 9:  Today we learned how to calculate electrical power using this equation:  P = VI (P is power in Watts, V is voltage in Volts, and I is Current in Amps).  We read 11.2 and completed pg 344 # 1-7, which is due next class.  To prepare for your Final Exam on Thursday,  spend time reviewing your class notes and any assignments you finished this year.  You will get a practice Final Exam on Wednesday afternoon.  Your Final Exam will be on Thursday morning.

 Science 9.  We began with a short review and time to complete the Resistor Color Code WS 2, which is due Friday.  We took notes on Resistance and Ohm's Law, we read section 10.4, and we did the Ohm's Law WS.  In the final portion of class we measured resistors and found the percent deviation.  We also did some year end review.

Chemistry 11:  We started with a review of [Ions]. We completed a mini-lab on Precipitation Reactions, and for each reaction we wrote a Formula Equation, Complete Ionic Equation, and a Net Ionic Equation.  In the second half we spent time reviewing for our Final Exam.  Below are the practice items you have been give as well as some answer keys, with links to some.  These review items will be collected on the day of your Final Exam.

 Chemistry 11:  We started with a little year end review:  Categories of Matter, Reaction Categories, etc.  We took notes on Solution Chemistry, adding to last day's notes.  Click here to see the notes.  Time was given to complete the Concentration of Ions WS ( which is due next class) and Lab 6E (Questions 1-3 only, no FUQ or conclusion, due Friday).  No one should be heading home with a lot of homework today - use the time to review for your favorite final exam.

Science 9:  I collected pg 309 # 1-5, 7-12.  Today we learned about how use the color codes on resistors to determine their resistance.  Due next class is the color code WS and pg 314 # 6-11.

Science 9:  After a short review we did the Voltages in Parallel and Series Lab, which is due for next class.  We also spent time finishing pg 309 # 1-5, 7-12, also due next class.  We spent a little time reviewing topics from September and October.  Please spend some time studing with a classmate or other helpful person - we have a final exam next week. 

Chemistry 11:  I collected your Organic Practice Test at the start of today's class.  We did the Organic Unit Test, then spent time on year-end review and Lab 6E.  No work is due Tuesday.

Chemistry 11:  We began with Part I of Lab 6E.  Nothing is due for 6E on Monday.  The other portion was spent completing the Organic Practice Test, which is due Monday.  Your Organic Test will be Monday too.

Science 9:  We took notes on Current Electricity, then read section 10.2.  Due Monday is pg 309 # #1-5, 7-12.  Write in sentences where appropriate, and make large clear schematic diagrams when asked.  (Diagrams should be about as big as a bank card).  We also watched this clip on Current Electricity. 

Science 9:   We began with an assignment where we practiced skills with Scientific Notation and number prefixes [ kilo = 1000, Mega = 1 000 000, Giga = 1 000 000 000].  Click here to see the WS.  Click here to see the key.  Time was given to complete the Electronics Booklet, which can be accessed from January 11th's post.  Click here to see the Electronics booklet answer key.  In the second half we learned how to measure the voltage of cells and batteries, and we recorded data on a number of types of sources (D, AA, AAA, coin batteries, Automotive batteries, 6V batteries).  In the final portion of class we read section 10.1 in Science Probe 9 and did pg 305 # 1-10, 12, which is due on Friday.  

Chemistry 11:  We began with a short review of functional groups, then we learned how to write organic reactions that form esters from carboxylic acids and alcohols.  We completed a home made worksheet with 5 reactions, this is due Friday.  Time was given to complete the Organic Practice Test, which is due just before you write your Organic Chemistry Test on Monday.  The last portion of class was spent on writing Dissolving Reactions and stating the concentration of each ion in solutions.  This video clip shows an animation of dissolving ionic NaCl, showing the free ions produced.  Numbers 1 - 4 on the Concentration of Ions WS is due Friday too.  Click here to see the key for # 1-4

Chemistry 11:  We started be learning about functional groups containing N and O. These notes show how to draw and name these molecules.  Due next class is the mini-booklet titled B Naming Organic Compounds.  We read Unit 9 sections 9.1 and 9.2, then did Unit 9 # 6,8 (also due next class).  The Moles Year End Review was given out, but is not due on any particular day.  Finish it and show me, then I will give you the next unit's review - its part of your final exam preparation.

Science 9:  We began by creating a simple circuit in order to make a small incandescent bulb glow.  We took notes Current Electricity, and completed this Booklet on Electronics.  We finished with a short video explaining how electricity is produced from Coal (most people in the world get electricity produced from burning coal, natural gas, or oil).

 Chemistry 11:  After a short review of Organic Chemistry we did Organic Quiz #4 as a review assignment.  We took notes on Solution Chemistry, and observed how some solutions can conduct electricity if they contain free ions.  These solutions are called electrolytes.  

Science 9:  Jade from Know Your Watershed was here to do Module 2 with is.  After some group brainstorming, everyone narrated a small portion of the story that describes how water makes its way from our taps back to the Illecillewaet River.  Next Day we will get into electricity, our final unit in Science 9.

 Chemistry 11 and Science 9:  Happy Thursday everyone!  No news yet on how the next weeks are shaping up but I want you to know that very clever people are working on that problem at this very moment.  Expect an email from Mr Kenyon soon.  

Your suggested tasks for Thursday are below.  A gold star to you for completing one of them.  Two gold stars for completing them all.

1) Shovel the driveway and walkway at your home.

2) Spend 15 minutes reading some of The Drawdown Project website, especially this article on how Education will reduce green-house gas emissions.  It's not just about burning less gasoline.

3) Super-tidy one room in your home.

4) Walk "The Flats".  Start at the skateboard park, cross the Illecillewaet River on the footbridge, and keep going until you can see the Airport Runway.  Turn around and return home.   Don't damage the nordic tracks - walk in the middle of the groomed trail.  About 2 hours, round trip.

5) Make food for people you care about.  Click here for some ideas.

6) Spend 20 minutes with your binder reviewing course topics from September or October.

Its a curious kind of gift, this 4 extra days of Christmas Break, but please consider it a special present and use your time well.  Help others!  Make a meal for your adult who is working all day.  Do the laundry, clean a bathroom or two.  Double your dog walking time.  Learn something new - by reading,  exploring a website, or by helping a favorite adult complete a task.  Spend time on Education Planner BC and explore career and training options for after graduation.  Make a snow sculpture of Jabba the Hut.  Avoid empty tasks that provide little benefit, like watching paint dry, reading dictionaries, or playing video games:)

Chemistry 11: After going through WS #9 we turned our attention to The Materials Economy and the role that hydrocarbons play.  We watched this clip that explains how natural gas is transformed into plastics like polyethylene.  We also watched The Story of Stuff, which explains how the Materials Economy works.  The energy provided by hydrocarbons drive the materials economy.
