Chemistry 12:  We completed Unit 3 # 42-52 today, and this is due on Friday.  We also learned about Hard Water and its properties.

Science 8:  We marked page 208 # 2.5-7, 12 & 13 but did not yet mark page 212 # 5 & 10.  (these are from a hand-out).  Everyone was assigned a lab partner, then we created kits for Lab 10-3, which we will complete on Friday.  A Measurement Review WS was completed before break, and after break we created an atomic structure poster using the unique atom that was assigned to each student.

Thursday, October 30

Chemistry 11:  I checked Unit 6 # 65, 66, and 67 while everyone completed Day 2 of Lab 6A.  All the Questions and Follow-up questions are due for Friday.  We also watched "The Shape of a Girl", a Green Thumb Productions one act play about bullying.

Tuesday, October 29, 2024

Chemistry 11:  We did any 12 from Unit 6 # 67 after we completed a short balancing review exercise.  We also completed Lab 6A Day 1.

Chemistry 12:  Due next class are Unit 3 # 40 and 41 as well as the Solubility Lab (a legal sized WS).  We took brief notes on Saturated Solutions.  I collected Lab 19C today.

Science 8:  We took brief notes on Atomic Structure, then we read pages 205 to 207 in the old Probe 9 and completed page 208 # 2,5-7, 12 and 13 in sentences where appropriate.

Monday, October 28, 2024

Chemistry 12:  We completed the Review of 3.1 to 3.4, then the rest of the class was for completing Lab 19C, which is due on Tuesday.

Chemistry 11:  Balancing Practice II was completed first, then we categorized all the systhesis, decomposition, single replacement, and double replacement reactions we could.  After finishing the notes on Categories of Reactions, we read section 6.5 and completed all of # 65.  We also categorized all the reactions from # 66, but we did not balance these.

Science 8:  We made a heating curve for a mystery yellow substance today, after marking page 192 (from a hand-out.  This was handed in.  We also did some curricular goal setting, and the goal setting sheet was handed in as well.  This video showed us what is inside an atom, becuase next we need to learn about atomic structure.

Thursday, October 24, 2024

Chemistry 11:  We reviewed what diatomic elements were, and a little time was provided to complete the WS titled "Writing Chemical Reaction Equations".  We looked at this animation to acknowledge that during chemical reactions there was no new atoms formed, they simply changed partners.  This idea is called the Law of Conservation of Mass, and is the reason we balance chemical reaction equations.  We reacted some sodium with water.  After going through the steps for balancing reaction equations, we completed the WS titled "Balancing Chemical Equations".  We began writing brief notes on the Categories of Chemical Reactions, and will finish this on Monday.

Wednesday, October 23rd.

Science 8:  We reviewed heating curves first, then we explored the elements on the periodic table.  We did page 192 (# 1, 3-7, 9)f rom the old Science Probe 9 textbook.  In the last few minutes we watched this short clip on Mercury.

Chemistry 12:  We completed a mini lab that allowed us to see some precipitation reactions.  We used page 4 in our data booklet to determine which product(s) made the low solubility solid, and we used page 3 in our data booklet to help us write the Formula Equations, Complete Ionic Equation, and Net Ionic Equation.  Reading sections 3.3 and 3.4 is useful for learning this skill.  The lab WS is due next class, along with Unit 3 # 1-10, 15, 18, and 20a-d.  Lab 19C is due on Tuesday.

Chemistry 12:  We completed part of the procedure for Lab 19C today, but no work needs to be completed for this.  The Equilibrium Practice Test was collected today, marked, and returned to you.   click here to see the answer key.   The Equilibrium Unit Test (Hebdon Unit 2 concepts only) will be Monday, and you can use your own personal databooklet as you write.  On the next unit test I will give you a fresh data booklet for the test.

Chemistry 11:  The Moles Unit Practice Test was due today and was collected at the beginning of class.  We began the Reactions Unit Today with a precipitiation reaction and some brief notes.  We read Unit 6.1 and 6.2, completed Unit 6 # 1-6, and a WS titled "Writing Reaction Equations".  These are not due on Tuesday.  Your Moles Test will happen on Monday.  Click here to see the MC answers and here to see the WR answer for the Moles Practice test.

Science 8:  Today we did Lab 7-4 from the textbook.   No homework is due, except a few of you have not yet given me the Binder Checklist you did at home with your adult.

Thursday, October 17, 2024

Chemistry 11:  Lab 4D was handed in at the start of today's class.  We had a discussion about dilutions and I showed how to make a 2X dilution, as well as a 5X and a 10X dilution.  We tried one calculation to determine the final concentration when water is added to a solution.  We read pages 99 - 102, then completed 78 - 82, 86 and 88.   We spent time finishing the practice test, which is due on Friday.  Moles Unit Test (Unit 5) on Monday.   In the second half everyone was given a unique solution to make using a concentrated stock solution.

Tuesday, October 15, 2024

Science 8 :  We reviewed density and KMT topics before handing in the Binder Checklist, which was due today.  Most students asked for another day to finish this with their adult.  We saw how a bimetallic strip bends with heat, and straightens with cooling, and we looked at this animation to remind us of the KMT and why most materials expand when heated.  After reading pages 250 -253, we completed pg 259 # 1-6,8,10.

Chemistry 11:  After a review of making standard solutions we handed in the Making a Standard Solution Lab.  Time was given to write the conclusion for Lab 4D (due on Thursday) and the Moles Practice Test (due on Friday).  Moles test on Monday.
