Science 8:  We began with a short review of chemistry, optics, and cell biology.  We finished our volcano data set, and everyone was shown how to copy the whole data set and paste it into a new sheet.  On the second sheet, students were assigned a way to sort their data.  PDF's for both the whole sheet and the sorted sheet were saved onto everyone's OneDrive, and these files were sent to Mr. Gale in a properly worded email.  This set of tasks is not due Tuesday.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  We went over WS #6 after Lab 7B and the Dead Sea Lab were handed in.  We took notes on Aromatics, then we read section 10.5 and did Unit 10 # 30 & 31.  For each item, sketch the molecule and write the name.  The last few minutes were spent on the Year End Review assignments - Moles and Reactions have been made available.  You will have an organic test Monday, and a Final Exam on the morning of June 21st.  We also were introduced alcohol functional groups.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Science 8:  We added to our mineral table,  writing properties quartze, hematite, horneblend, and pyrite.  After a short discussion of sedimentary and igneous rocks, we we watched this clip about Phreatic eruptions.  We also did the Volcano inventory spreadsheet, click here to see the instructions. No work is due for Friday.

 Chemistry 11:  We took notes on Alkenes and Alkynes, then we read pgs 226 and 227.  Organic WS # 4 is due on Friday.  Time was given to complete the Dead Sea Lab, which is also due on Friday.  A little time was also give to finish Lab 7B as well.  Some students began their Moles Year End review WS.  We finished the day off by writing a practice quiz on alkanes and cyclics.  Your final exam will be on Wednesday, June 21st.

Chemistry 11:   Today I collected Unit 10 # 3-9. then we learned how to name and draw structures for cyclic hydrocarbons and haloalkanes.  Read pgs 222-225 in Hebdon, then do # 15-19 (for each, write the name and draw the structure).  At the end, we did a homework quiz on banched alkanes.  

Science 8:  After a short discussion on rock families (igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic), we made a table of 5 different minerals and we described their properties and wrote down their chemical formulas.  We read section 11.1 from the old Science Probe 9 textbook, and we did pg 222 # 1-5, which is due next class.  We finished off with glacial land features.

Chemistry11:  We began with a short review of the calendar, and spoke about how a fresh data booklet will be issued to everyone on the day of your final.   We reviewed naming and drawing structures of branched alkanes, then we read pgs 218 to 221 and completed Unit 10 # 3-9.  For each item, you will be given one mark for sketching the molecule, and one mark for naming the molecule.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Science 8:  We watched the second half of the Volcano!, and wrote down the hazards that were described in the documentary.  We finished off by looking at land features that are not caused by plate tectonics, but that are caused by erosion and weathering from glaciers.

Chemistry 11:  We did Lab 7B today, and all of the Questions and Calculations and Follow-up questions are due Monday.

Science 8:  Today we wrote notes on 3 ways that Volcanoes form.  We watched the first half of Volcano!, and we listed the hazards to people associated with volcanos.

 Science 8:  We began the day going over the Hawaiian Island and how the volcanoes are formed over a hotspot in the mantle.   We watched this animation showing a divergent plate boundary, which explains mid ocean ridges, underwater volcanoes, and rift valleys.  We watched this clip on convergent boundaries, showing how coastal mountains and inland volcanic belts are formed.  This one shows an oceanic -oceanic convergence, explaining deep ocean trenches and volcanic island arcs (Philippines, Indonesia, Japan).  In the second half we viewed Williamson's Lake water, and we drew specimens of phytoplankton, zooplankton, and multicellular invertebrates.

 Chemistry 11:  We took notes on branched alkanes and we did Organic WS #2.  We also prepared Lab 7B, and we will do this Friday.  We will also have a quiz on the names of the 10 alkanes, in order, from one carbon to ten carbons long.

Science 8:  We began by marking pg 413 # 1-5 from our Science Probe 8 textbook. We then watched a few minutes of Volcano!, a National Geographic documentary about the Crafts (a couple from France who were famous volcano experts).  We did activity 17A, where we used mapping data to determine the speed of the Pacific Plate as it passes over the Mid Pacific Hotspot and forms the Hawaiian Island chain.  Due Thursday is analysis a-f from activity 17A.

Chemistry 11:  We took notes on Organic Chemistry, then we did Organic WS #1 which is due Wednesday.  In the last few minutes we brainstormed how to find the concentration of NaCl in our mini Dead Sea containers (saturated sodium chloride solutions)
