Chemistry 12:  We began with a short discussion about when to use Ka or Kb to find pH.  We spoke about weak acids, weak bases, strong acids, and strong bases.  We took notes on buffers, then read section 4.19.  Due Tuesday is Unit 4 # 131-134, 136, and 139.  We also got a start on the All Topics Mini-review WS.

Chemistry 11:  Today we began with Lab 12B, where we used molecular model kits to construct molecules.  This allowed us to see the 3 dimensional arrangement of atoms in molecules.  We did Procedure # 1,2,4 only, and no questions or conclusion.  In the final part of class we did the Dead Sea Lab, and performed all our calculations on a worksheet.

Science 8:  A review of human eye anatomy was followed by a discussion of all the things that can harm vision.  We read pgs 206 - 210 and completed pg 210 # 1-7 in sentences - this is due on Tuesday.  We finished off with a world map, where we labelled all the oceans and continents.  We shaded 5 countries that we might want to travel to.

Science 8:  We self marked pg 186 # 1-6 first, then reviewed the anatomy of the eye.  We did an eye quiz, then read pgs 202 to 205 about the human eye.  pg 205 # 1-5 were assigned and are due Monday.  We watched this clip about human eye structure and function.

Chemistry 11:  We wrote notes on Solutions, then read section 9.1 and 9.2. Due Monday is a WS titled Review of Molar Concentration.

Chemistry 12:  We did Kb Calculations today.   Click here to see the key.  Due Monday is Unit 4 # 84-88.  We also got a little start on the Indicators Mini Review.

Thursday, December 7, 2023

Chemistry 12:  We began by going through # 75 and 78 together to learn about calculations involving weak acids. # 74 - 80 are due on Friday.  Two review sheets were made available, one on Hydrolysis and one on general acid-base topics.  In the second half we wrote notes on Acid Base Indicators, read section 4.17 and completed unit 4 # 108 - 115.  Friday, all of the above work should be completed, and Lab 20G needs to be handed in.  Test late next week or early on the last week.

Science 8:  Today I collected pg 181 # 1-5,7,9,10 as well as Lab 5-7.  In the first half we read pgs 182 to 186 and completed pg 186 # 1-6.   We also watched this clip about forming large optical mirrors.  In the second half we did the lens lab (procecure only, no questions) and completed the eye anatomy sheet.  Tomorrow we will do a quiz on the eye anatomy.

Chemistry 11:  We began by adding notes to our graphs for Lab 11A.  It is important that chemists know the trends in the radii of atoms and ions in order to understand patterns in melting point, bond strength, and other properties of compounds and elements.  We read pgs 171 - 176 and completed Unit 8 # 57-67.  We continued on with our Dead Sea lab.  The Lewis Dot Structures were checked today too.

Tuesday, December 5, 2023

Science 8:  We did Lab 5-7 (Procedure only) to learn about convex and concave mirrors, the principal axis, the focal point, and the focal distance.  Time was given to finish pg 181 # 1-5,7,9,10, and this will be due next class.

Chemistry 11:  Today was a careers day; no chemistry class occurred this morning.

Chemistry 12:  We developed our conclusion outline together, then 25 minutes was given to write a conclusion.  Lab 20G is due Thursday. We also did the Hydrolysis WS (due Thursday) and we finished with a quiz on Hydrolysis (will these species make acidic, basic or neutral solutions in water?   [KHSO3, NH4I, NaNO3, MgCl2].  On the quiz, you need to write the key Bronsted-Lowry reaction and show any necessary calculations to support your answer.

Science 8:  We reviewed Refraction, then read pgs 174 adn 175.  We partially completed pg 181 # 1-5,7,9,10 but this is not due Tuesday.   We also completed a race through a paper course while viewing our pencil with a mirror.  Tough!

Chemistry 11:  Today took notes on Chemical Bonding (Part A, Covalent Bonding) and learned how to draw Lewis Dot Structures for single, double and triple bonded molecules and polyatomic ions.  Nice work!  Due Wednesday afternoon is the DIY WS on Lewis Dot Structures.

Chemistry 12:  We took notes on Hydrolysis today, and read 4.13 and completed #69.  # 69 is due Tuesday but not Lab 20G - it will be due on Thursday.

Friday, December 1, 2023

Chemistry 12:  We spent the day working on Lab 20G, which will be due on Tuesday.  If you start your conclusion, be sure to write about terms like equivalence point, primary standard, and standard solution.

Chemistry 11:  After a short review of atomic structure and isotopes, we read pgs 151 to 157 and we did 4 problems from each of  26, 27 and 28.  This is due Monday.  Both La 20C and 11A should be done for Monday as well.

Science 8:  We reviewed the electromagnetic spectrum, then we did Lab 5-3.  Nothing is due for Monday.
