Chemistry 12:  Today we did Lab 21D, which is due today or maybe tomorrow.  No homework is due over the holiday - please enjoy yourself, rest up, be ready for the last few weeks of this course after the break.  See you on Friday at the skating rink.

Science 8:  We took notes on the structure of the earth, which is analogous to the structure of an apple (thin crust, mantle, outer core, inner core).   We paced out 10 m in the classroom and did some calculations to determine the number of steps required to cover certain distances.  Most students were able to determine the distance from our classroom to the stair-top near the library, which is 72 m.  In the second half we read an article on Continental Drift, then we completed a cut and paste that showed us how evidence was used to determine the shape of Pangaea.   This short clip is funny, but doesn't really explain Continental Drift.

Science 8:  We reviewed the mountain peak names that can be seen from Revelstoke:  Begbie, MacPherson, Boulder, Kirkup, Copeland, Frisby, Revelstoke, Mackenzie, Cartier.  After, we used triangulation to find the epicenter of an earthquake using the seismograms from several locations.  In the final minutes we wrote Christmas cards to community members who might benefit from receiving something like this.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  I checked the Organic WS #2.  We learned to name and draw more complex molecules. After reading pgs 217 - 221 we completed # 3-9.  Sketch each molecule you are asked to name.  We finished with a quiz on the 10 simplest alkanes.  If it is appropriate for your family, please bring some non-parishable food items for the collection box in our room.   Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 12:  We learned how to use the Reduction Potential Table, then we read section 5.3 and completed # 7-12.   Click here to see the assignment log.

Science 8:  We completed our Waves and Optics Test today.  I also collected the practice test and Lab 6-4, the Sheep's Eye Dissection.  No work is due Tuesday.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  We took notes on Isomers, and we learned how to name and sketch branched alkanes.  Due Tuesday is Organic WS #2.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 12:  Today we wrote the Acids and Bases Unit Test.  Yeah!  Due Wednesday is U5# 1-5.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 12:  We began with a short discussion about Electrochemistry, click here to see the notes.   Our Acids and Bases Unit Test is Monday, so top priority is preparing for this.  Click here to see the Practice Test key.   I will collect your practice test on Monday before you start your test.  Due Tuesday is Unit 45 #1-5 as well as the Oxidation Number WS.   Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  I collected the Precipitation Reactions Mini-Lab WS.  We started the last unit, Organic Chemistry.  Click here to see the notes on Organic Chemistry.  Due Monday is the Organic WS #1.  We finished off with a quiz on determining the [ions].  Click here to see the assignment log.  Please bring non-perishable food items for the food drive:)

Science 8:  We went over the questions at the end of the Sheep's eye dissection lab, and I would like your lab on Monday.  Time was given for the practice test, and we went over the answer using the posted key.  In the final portion of class we wrote notes on Seismology, then we used compasses to draw perfect circles.   Test on Monday on Waves and Optics.   Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  We learned how to write dissolving reactions and how to find the concentration of free ions in solution.  Due Friday is the WS titled "Concentration of Ions".   We also learned how to write the Formula Equation, Complete Ionic Equation, and Net Ionic Equations for precipitation reaction.   We did the Precipitation Reactions Mini Lab and the associated hand-out.   This is also due on Friday.   The final portion of class was devoted to completing the Atomic Theory Practice Test (there will not be a test).

Chemistry 12:  Today we completed the Acids and Bases Practice Test, which is due Friday.  The Unit Test will be on Monday, and be sure to spend a little time ensuring that the math formulas are memorized.  We also started the Electrochemistry unit today too, by seeing some half cells, full cells, and learning how to write Oxidation number.  The Oxidation Number WS is not due Friday.

Science 8:  We did Lab 6-4 today, the Sheeps Eye Dissection.  All Analyze and Conclude and Apply questions, but no conclusion.  We also completed the Waves and Optics Practice Test - you will get 15 minutes to finish this on Friday, but it would be helpful to have it ready for Friday's class.  On Monday we will do the Waves and Optics Test.

Tuesday, December 12, 2023

Chemistry 12:  We started with the Buffers Mini-Review today, followed by some time to work on the "All Topics Acid Base Review" WS.  Both answer keys were posted at the side counter.  We wrote brief notes on Metal and Non-Metal Oxides, and the practice test was given out.  Friday is the due date for the practice test, and our Acid Base test will be Monday.

Science 8:  After going through our assignments on Pag 205 and 210, we made a placemat.  We read pages 216 - 223 to learn about microscopes, refracting Telescopes, reflecting telescopes, cameras, and binoculars.  For each technology, we made a sketch, showed any lenses or mirrors, showed the observer, and made 1 ray path.  The placemat will be due Wednesday.  On Monday we will have the Waves and Optics Test.

Chemistry 11:  We added details to our sketches for Lab 12B. Time was given to complete the Dead Sea Lab, which is due next class.  We started the Atomic Theory Practice test, which will be due Friday.
