Chemistry 11:  We found the percent error in our water density from the Density Lab, then this was handed in.  Next was Lab 3A, where we completed the procedure, Questions 1,4, and Follow-up Questions 2,3.  No conclusion.  This is due Friday.  Click here for 3A data that you can use if you are away and want to complete 3A now.  We also learned what hydrates are, read page 72, and completed Unit 4 # 6 and 7.  This is also due on Friday.  We finished with a quiz on significant figures and calculations.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Tuesday, September 16

Chemistry 11:  After a practice quiz on Significant Figures and Calculations, we completed the Density Lab.  Everyone had to find the density of 4 materials (a metal solid, a non-metal solid, distilled water, and a colored mystery liquid).  The marked practice quizzes were given back before the end of class, and next day we will do a similar quiz.  The Density Lab is due Wednesday.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  We went over the answers to page 21 # 1-5, then we performed a short inquiry.  "Does diffusion occur faster in hot water, or cold water?" was the question, and everyone worked with an assigned partner to design an experiment, carry it out, and record data and observations.  We finished by listing the single independent variable (the condition that the scientist changes - temperature in this case) and all the controlled factors (every other aspect must be the same for each trial, to be fair).   In the process we learned our way around room 313, practiced being safe and focused, and worked on our science communication skills.  The lab was handed in at the end of class. Chemistry 11: We began with brief notes on how to perform calculations in Science, followed by reading page 24 - 37 and completion of Unit 2 # 57 & 58.  A little time was provided to prepare Lab 3A.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  After a short discussion on how to enter a classroom, we learned the difference between "Concentrated" and "Dilute".  We took notes on how materials cross the cell membrane, then we read pages  40 to 44, then started page 39 # 1-5,8,9,11 but these are note due.   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Friday, Sept 12th.

Chemistry 11: We began with a  WS titled "Measurement to the nearest one-tenth of the Smallest Division", which is the same as Unit 2 # 48, 49, and 50. There are answers in your Hebdon text on page 254 and 255.  We then read about naming and writing formulas for elements, ions, and ionic compounds (pages 65 - 72). We completed # 1, 4 (any 10), and 5(any 10) from the exercises embedded in this reading.  Both of the above tasks are due Monday.  Remaining time was spent working on Lab 2D, which is due on Tuesday. 

Science 8: We completed a mini practice quiz on Microscope parts and Cell anatomy, then we learned about the 5 characteristics of living things.  We watched this video clip from the Amoeba Sisters, then we read pages 8-12 in our textbook.  Due Monday is page 21 # 1-7 in sentences.  

Thursday, Sept 11th.

Chemistry 11:  We started with a short review of key ideas (parallax error, meniscus, significant figures) , then we dove into Lab 2D.  New today is the idea that when dividing, the final value can only contain as many signficant figures as the fewest in all the values involved in the calculation.  For example, if a 4 digit measurment is divided by a 3 digit measurement, then the final value can only be shown with 3 digits.  We finished all the procedure, Questions and Calculations, and Follow-up Questions.  In the final 30 minutes we learned about writing names and formulas of ionic compounds.  

Chemistry 11:  We completed the WS titled Atoms and Molecules to review topics from the last few days, then we learned about measuring in Science.  We completed the Measurement and Significant Figures WS, then we prepared Lab 2D for tomorrow.  Due next class are the two worksheets.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  After reviewing microscope anatomy and care and handling, we completed a mini-lab where we made a dry mount of human hair, and a wet mount of a lower case letter e from a newspaper.  We made sketches of the field on our lab report, and these were handed in at the end of the class.  Page 39 will NOT be due Wednesday.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  We began by going through page 31 # 1-6 (in sentences), then we learned about the parts of a microscope and how to care and handle them properly.  With our partner we used classroom glassware to measure 90 mL of water two different ways.  In the last 30 minutes we read about Cell Theory (page 31 and 32) and completed page 39 # 1, 2, 4-10 in sentences.   Page 39 will be due on Wednesday, and you'll be given some time on Tuesday to finish it.    Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Chemistry 11:  We reviewed a little to start off, then we wrote brief notes on the particles that make up matter.  We read section 3.3 and completed Unit 3 # 33-44 in point form.  When accomplishing work in Hebdon, please check your work against the answer key periodically to ensure accuracy.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Chemistry 11:  After an intro to Scientific Notation WS we added to our Chemistry Notes from Thusday.  We filled in the last column of the 3 column table.  We read through the Lab Safety Rules in our textbook (pg vi and vii), then completed a short practice safety quiz - this is not due Monday.   

Science 8:  We reviewed cell anatomy first, then drew an animal cell on our notes from last class.  We read pages 25 - 30 and completed page 31 # 1-6. in sentences.  These are due on Monday.  We watched the last 5 minutes of this clip about cell structure and function.  

Chemistry 11:  After reviewing the answer key for yesterday's KMT WS, we took brief note on Chemistry and viewed 14 sample of matter, describing their physical properties.  In the second half, we read sections 1.3 to 1.6 and completed the Safety Map.  We looked up WHMIS symbols on the web and sketched/labelled them on the back of the map.  Due next class are all your supplies (see your outline for a complete list), the safety map, and the WHMIS symbols. Everyone received their pink periodic tables today.

Science 8:  We looked at a list of safety rules and categorized them according to 4 different categories - this was completed on the back of the DIY safety map from yesterday.  We then learned about the parts of cells, took brief notes, and watched this clip.  We labelled cell anatomy on this WS and colored each part a different color.  In the final minutes, we discussed expectations (maybe you call these "rules"), just out of formality, because everyone seems to know how to succeed in our class already without being told:).  Next class I will want to check your supplies (pencils, pens, calculator, ruler, binder, paper, textbook, protractor).

Chemistry 11:  After reviewing the materials you'll need for this course, we went straight into the Kinetic Molecular Theory with a demo and small assignment (KMT WS).  This animation helped us with our learning.  We fetched textbooks from the library as well.  In the final 20 minutes we read section 1.1 in our Hebdon Text and completed the map as prescribed in the text.  I checked for signed outlines.  Due next class is the KMT WS and the classroom/hallway/fire escape map. 

Science 8:  We reveiwed the tools you will need to learn in Science 8, then we went through all the classroom safety equipment (fire extinguisher, fire blanket, fume hood, emergency gas shut-off button, eye-wash, emergency shower, and eyewear drawer).  We constructed a full-page map showing all this equipment, as well as the nearest fire pull, nearest fire extinguisher, and fire exit route.  After signing out textbooks from the library, we read pages xviii and xix in the pre-text section.  To finish, we spoke about many of the ways to become involved in the culture of our school (arts, sports, volunteerism, etc).
