Junior Girls Volleyball:  We travel to Vernon Secondary on Thursday and play at 5:00, 6:00, and 7:00.  We will leave in the afternoon at 1:45 (to be confirmed).   We will drop off the boys in Salmon Arm on the way there and pick them up on the way home.    Click here to see the full League schedule and rules.

Science 8:  The "Cup Experiment" was collected today, after we added the Title, Purpose, and Materials section to the front.  We made a place mat and learned about Nutrient Categories by reading pg 64 - 69.  On Tuesday we will mark pg 63 # 1-10.

Science 10:  We started with a quiz on Human Reproductive Anatomy.  We went to the library to research how flowering plants reproduce sexually.  The Assignment, which is due Tuesday, is outlined below in blue.

At the library, you will spend 20 minutes learning by reading, and taking brief notes.  Allow yourself about 5 minutes of video learning, and use your headphones.  Spend 20 more minutes creating a mind-map or mini poster that answers these questions:

A      How do flowering plants reproduce sexually?

B      In what structures do meiosis, fertilization, and embryo development occur?

Finish this for Tuesday, but limit yourself to 20 minutes of focused work outside of class.

Marking guide:

-Point form notes are created that attempt to answer the questions posed.

-Miniposter shows some level of organization.

-There is considerable connection between Questions A and B and the content on the miniposter.

-The amount of detail and number of key terms show that new learning has occurred and is consistent with a 60 minute deadline.

-you are able to explain your miniposter to someone verbally


Earth Science 11:  We started with a mini review on Atmospheric Science topics and cloud formation.  Then we did a worksheet where thermometers were read in order to determine the Dew Point temperature for several scenarios.  We finished with a You tube video called Luke Howard, the man who named the clouds.

Science 10:  Due Friday is the reproductive anatomy WS and # 1-4 on pg 381 of today's hand out. We self marked pg 373 from an answer key at the start of today's class, and a quiz was given on this material at the end of the class.

On Friday, there will be a quiz on Male and Female reproductive anatomy.  You will be given a blank anatomy diagram like we did today.

Science 8:  Today we did the experiment that you wrote the procedure for on Monday.    We wrote a Discussion about our experiment.  We also read about different kinds of cells, organs, and systems when we read section 2.1 and then we completed pg 59 # 1-10 in fine sentences.  This is due on Friday.

Volleyball:

Please bring in your athletic agreement, and Jersey deposit to the office.  There will be a meeting at lunch on Friday to give out jerseys, and we will practice after school on Thursday at BVE from 3:30 to 5:15.

Science 8:  WS - do # 1-4.  For # 4, use the back energy sheet to calculate the energy needed for 3 activities.  Choose 2 activites, and for the 3rd activity use a full night's sleep.  We marked pg 49 # 1-5 but did not get to

Earth Science 11:  Read pg 473-475 and create a mini poster showing the 3 types of heat transfer. Create a sketch of each type of heat transfer, and write captions explaining how the method works.   Add a title, your name, and the date.

Science 10:  Read section 16.3 on ledger sized paper and do # 1-8 on pg 373 in sentences.  Due Wednesday.

Volleyball:  Have your forms into the office asap.  Special practice on Thursday after school.



 

 

Friday, September 15

Science 8:  Today I collected the Microscope diagram sheets to look at the Care and Handling notes you made on the back.  We reviewed cell anatomy.  Read pg 31-34 and fill in the placemat with brief notes.  Do pg 39 # 1-12 in fine sentences.  We finished the microscope activity, including viewing some zooplankton and phytoplankton from Williamson's lake.

Science 10:  We reviewed/learned about how cells divide, and why.  We wrote notes, read from a hand-out, and did # 1-6 at the end of the hand out.  This is due Friday.  Microscope handling and care was reviewed, and we finished by viewing and sketching unicellular plants and animals using water from my favorite swamp, Williamson's lake.  Eventually we will determine the surface area to volume ratio of these small cells.  On Friday, I would like to collect the care and handling paragraphs too.

Earth Science 11:  Heating the Earth lab, which is not due Monday.

Earth Science 11:  Today I collected the "Layers of the Atmosphere" assignment, including the graph. We wrote notes together on what makes different parts of the atmosphere different temperatures.  We read pg 455-460 and completed a worksheet (click here to see the WS) on this topic.  We spent the second half watching a National Geographic documentary on the Atmosphere.   Click here to watch the video.


Tuesday, Sept 12

Science 10:  Today we marked # 1-6 from the hand-out on energy from Monday.  We did a lab that showed how Surface area to volume ratio decreased as cubes increased in size.  This explains why cells only reach their very tiny proportions, then the become inefficient and start division.  This lab is not due Thursday.
 

Lab Discussion Questions

1.  How much greater is Medium's length than the small  cube?  How much greater is Medium's volume than small's?  Is the ratio of Surface Area to Volume also greater for Medium cube?

2.  Compare Large and Medium cube in the same way as you did  in number 1.  Is the surface-to-volume ratio increasing or decreasing as the cube becomes larger?

3.  Write a general statement about the effects of surface-to-volume ratio as a cube becomes larger.

Earth Science:  Complete the layers of the earth assignment, including the graph of Temperature vs Altitude.  Today we did a lab on Relative Humidity, which we all measured to be about 65%.

Science 8:  Today we marked pg 31 # 1,2,4-6 together, to see how we mark work together.  We did a lab where we made wet mounts, dry mounts.  This is not due, and we will finish it on Thursday.

Science 10:  Finish # 1-6 on the hand out titled Energy for Cells at Work in fine sentences for Tuesday.  Nothing was collected today.

Science 8:  Today we took notes on the anatomy of animal and plant cells.  We read pg 25-30, and did # 1,2,4-6 on page 31, which is due tomorrow.  We also sketched the 8 WHMIS symbols, but this is not due Tuesday.

Earth Science 11:  I collected the layers of the atmosphere mini-poster.  We worked on an assigment to learn about how temperature changes with altitude, but this is not due.  Please get a ruler and a calculator for this class.
