Chemistry 11:  We wrote notes on our two graphs from Lab 11A,  part II, stating the periodic trends in atomic radius and first ionization energy.  Next, we completed Lab 6D day two and completed all the questions and follow-up questions, and wrote a conclusion.  Lab 6D is due Monday.  One more day to bring items or cash for the Food Bank - thanks Ms. Giselle!

Chemistry 12:  We reviewed pH and pOH, then completed a Review WS (4.11).  The last half hour was spent writing a conclusion for Lab 20G, which is due Monday.   I checked Unit 4 # 38 - 44 and 47-57.

Science 8:   We read about optical devices that extend human vision on pages 216 - 225.  We wrote brief notes on each one, making a sketch and showing the location of each mirror, lens, or prism.  We also included one ray path, and the location of the observer and the object.   In the last few minutes we did a quiz on human eye anatomy.

Thursday, November 28, 2024

Science 8:  We went through page 205 # 105, then we wrote notes on the Human Eye.  We labelled an eye diagram, to practice identifying anatomy, then we read pages 206 - 210.  We completed page 210 # 1-7 and finished page 197 # 1-10.  Clear diagrams are a useful way to explain ideas with less words.  In the second half we discussed the difference between near sightedness, far sightedness, and astigmatism.  This video shows how laser eye surgery can correct the cornea to eliminate these issues.  We raced around a paper track using a plane mirror to view our hand and had trouble with direction.  Lab 6-2, page 207 was the final task, and this can easily be accomplished at home.  Only page 210 and 197 are due next class.

Chemistry 12:  We took brief notes on the Relative Strength of Acids, then we read 4.10 and completed 38-44, 47, and 48. Extra time as used to finish Lab 20G.  In the second half we learned about pH and pOH.  We read 4.11 and completed # 49-57.  The textbook work is due Friday, and Lab 20G is due on Monday.

Chemistry 12:  We worked on Lab 20G today, and many groups finished the procedure from Parts I to Part IV. Nothing is due for tomorrow, but a little home review would be helpful (we have learned 4.1 to 4.10 so far).   Chemistry will run as usual tomorrow (Tuesday is Careers Day) but you may have CLC seminars to attend in other periods.

Science 8:  We did a modified Lab 5-8 today, and drew ray diagrams showing the light path in a convex and concave lense.  We read pages 190 - 196 and did page 193 # 1-4 in sentences.  Your quizzes were handed back today too.

Friday November 22nd

Science 8:  We added a few note to our ray diagrams of concave and convex mirrors from yesterday.  We read pages 182 - 186, then completed page 189 # 1-5, 10.    We finished with a quiz on waves and frequency.

Chemistry 11:  We handed in the Reactions Practice Test today.  On Monday we will have a test on the Reactions Unit (Chapter 6 & 7).  After a discussion of the development of the atomic theory (we spoke about Thompson's model and Rutherford's Model, and the evidence that supported each), we drew Bohr diagrams for atoms from Hydrogen to Calcium.    This animation helps to understand Rutherford's gold foil experiment.  We then observed low pressure tubes of Br, Ne, O, H, and Hg with spectroscopes to see the line spectra that they produced.  No work is due for Monday - spend some time preparing for Monday's Reactions Test.

Chemistry 12:  We completed a portion of Lab 20G today, and will continue on Monday.

Thursday, November 21, 2024

Chemistry 11:  We began with a demonstration of a neutralization reaction:  500 mL of 2.0 M HCl was added to 500 mL of 2.0 M KOH.  The result was 1.0185 L of solution - somehow an extra 18 mL appeared. Do you know why?  We completed the Reactions Practice Test after this - this item is due Friday. Test on Monday.  In the second half we took brief notes on Atomic theory, then read section 8. 1 to page 148 and completed Unit 8 # 13- 19 and 22.  The Unit 8 problems are not due Friday, but the Practice Test is due.
