Science 10:  We began with a look at the Calendar, and discussed our Energy Test on the double block next week.  We reviewed Energy terms (potential, elastic, energy, geiger counter, and 7 energy resources).  We read pages 234 - 237 and filled in a placemat with  the workings of a photovoltaic cell.  We also shows how solar energy can improve the lives of those not connected to the electrical grid (one in seven people in the world have no electricity run to their home). We finished with this clip about Green Acres Solar Plant in southern Alberta.  We didn't get time to watch these two clips on Gemasolar:  This one shows the steam generator.

Science 8:  We began with a short review, then we wrote the eye anatomy on a Worksheet titled "The Human Eye".  We read pages 202 to 205, then finished page 205 # 1-5 in sentences.  We finished with Activity 6.2 on page 207.

Chemistry 12:    We began with a look at the Calendar, and discussed how the 3rd unit is drawing to a close by the end of this week.  We reviewed solubility, solubility product, saturated, concentrated, and dilute.  We did U3 # 45 and 52 together, then time was given to finish U3 # 45-54.  Click here to see the key.   The WS titled Mini Review of 3.1 to 3.6 was given out as well.  These are due on Tuesday.

Science 8:       We learned about the images produced by mirrors and lenses.  After reading pages 190 - 193 we did page 197 # 1-8, 10, 11, which is due on Friday.   We also started page 185 # 1-5, but this is not due next class.  The final half hour was spent on the Pop Can Lab, where we learned how to use bunsen burners and observed rapid condensation.  The video shows a larger version of the deformations we saw today.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Wednesday, March 12

Science 10:     After a minireview exercise, the Decay Equations WS was handed in.  We took brief notes on Nuclear Energy, the we read pages 228 - 231.  We competed our second WS on Nuclear reactions.  In the second half we created a digital poster showing the energy transformations occurring during a favorite activity, such as dancing, making pottery, or playing basketball.  Your graphic must explain at least 3 energy transformations, have several images of different aspects of your activity, and include 1 calculation showing a relevant amount of energy.  This sample shows how it might look.   We also attended a short assembly in the District's new Digital Device policy.   Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

Chemistry 12:     We completed the Solubility Lab, and we worked on Unit 3 # 1-15.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

Science 10:     We reviewed Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration first, then we watched this TED clip about Wind Turbines.  We looked at the photo of Homer Simpson below working with nuclear fuels, and how he was using 2 of the 3 techniques necessary to minimize the danger of radioactive materials (shielding, maximum distance, minimum time exposure). We used this animation to learn about alpha decay, then we completed this WS on Radioactive Decay (alpha, beta, and gamma radiation).  Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

Science 8:       We reviewed occupations that may use different types of EMR, then we did the lenses minilab.   Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Chemistry 12:     We completed the Equilibrium Unit Test today.  Remaining time was spent on Unit 3 # 1-15, which are due Thursday.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

Science 10:     We finished the Coal fired Electricity production video, and spoke about how governments can force companies to adjust their practice to preserve the biosphere.  What a terrific way to help the environment:  train up as an environmental scientist or chemical engineer and be involved in efforts to make industry more clean.  More effective than sitting in trees or blocking railroads.  After reviewing the Heat Lab (PartA:  Conduction, Part B:  Radiation) we added a title for Part C: Convection, but did not complete any work on this yet.  We read pages 224 - 226 and learned about Cellular Respiration, Photosynthesis, and Fossil Fuels.  We wrote brief notes on our placemat as we read.  We finished off with a short practice quiz on Energy calculations.  Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

Science 8:       We went over page 163, then we completed a minilab where students were instructed to direct a light ray using mirrors.  We finished with a discussion about kindness.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Friday, March 7th

Science 8:  Course selection sheets were collected today.  We took brief notes on Mirrors, then we completed a mini-lab to explore the reflection pattern found with convex and concave mirrors.  After reading page 184 - 186 we completed WS on Reflection and Refraction.

Science 10:  We completed Part B of the Heat Lab:  Radiation.  We performed an experiment to test which color absorbs more radiant energy, black or silver, then we created a graph of Temperature vs Time for each trial.  In the final minutes we learned about how electricity is created from coal by watching this clip

Chemistry 12:  The Equilibrium Practice test was collected, marked, and returned today.  We took brief notes on Solutions, then we spent time getting ready for Monday's test on Unit 2 and starting Unit 3 # 1-15 (these are not due Monday).  We also began an experiment to determine the solubility of MgSO4.
