Chemistry 11:  We began with a WS to review categories of matter and microscopic views of particles.  Next was brief notes on Significant Figures, and we read section 2.5 to page 39.  Due Monday are Unit 2 # 55-58 ( avoid showing math steps or this assignment only).  I did not yet collect Unit 3 # 33-44 and Unit 3 # 1-3,5,13-15, but will on Monday.  Click here for the Chem 11 Assignment log.

Junior Boys Volleyball:  Practice for all at 7:00 pm on Sunday.  Thanks for helping out with the Senior Last Spike - what a terrific way to "give back" and play a role in your school.  Being around in the final matches on Saturday will be extra helpful as organizers would appreciate help with clean-up.

Chemistry 11: We began with a short review of the categories of matter - we discussed a few kitchen ingredients, then we looked at microscopic views of matter to review pure/mixture and element/compound differences.  After taking brief notes on the Particles that make up Matter, we read section 3.3 in Hebdon and completed Unit 3 # 33-44.  Time was provided to finish Unit 3 # 1-3,5,13-15 too.  In the second half we determined the density of 4 materials (metal, non-metal solid, water, colored liquid) to practice proper scientific measuring.  I asked that the density results be reported to 5 digits.

Chemistry 12:  We completed the procedure for Lab 18C today, and some of us began the analysis.  I collected Unit 1 # 14-22 as well.  Next day there will 45 minutes devoted to Lab 18C, and it will be due on Tuesday next week.

Wednesday, Sept 16

Tuesday, Sept 15

Chemistry 11:  We checked our work on the Intro to Measurement WS by using this key, then we took brief notes on the Categories of Matter.  Following this we then we filled in the right-most column on the Properties of Matter task from Monday, noting if the samples were pure/mixtures, homogeneous/heterogeneous  We read sections 3.1 and 3.2 in Hebdon, then we started Unit 3 # 1-3, 5, 13-15 - these questions are not due next class.  

Chemistry 12:  We began with a mini review of rates problems, then we filled in the right column on our Factors that affect Rates of Reaction notes.  We read 1.4 and 1.5, and completed Unit 1 # 14-22.  I collected Lab 7 today.

Chemistry 11:  After a brief review of safety topics, we created a 3 column on our notes from Friday (headings:  Name/Physical Properties/Category) and we looked at about a dozen different materials and recorded their physical properties.  A little time was provided to finish reading Unit 1 (pages 1-8 in Hebdon) and complete the map as per the instructions in the text.  In the second half we learned about how scientists measure (to the nearest one-tenth of the smallest division) and how the last digit in scientific measurements is called the uncertain digit because it depends on the measurer's opinion.  We started the Measurement Intro WS.  

Chemistry 12:   We wrote brief notes on Factors that affect rates of reaction, then we read section 1.3 and completed # 10-13.  The remaining time was spent completing Lab 7.  Both the lab and the Hebdon questions are due Tuesday.


Friday, September 11th

Chemistry 12:  Unit 1 # 1-9 was handed in first.  After a successful fire drill we completed Lab 7A from a hand out.  We recorded data and started the analysis right on the Lab 7A hand-out.  Lab 7A is not due Monday, we will work on it during class. No work is due for Monday, but please ensure your supplies are all sorted out.

Chemistry 11:  We reviewed safety topics and read through the safety rules at the start of the Heath Lab Manual.  The rules were categorized according to how familiar students are with them (Most Students know, Some Students Know, Few students Know) and we had a special column for rules that are completely new and unfamiliar.  We wrote brief notes on Chemistry before the end of the period.  No work is due for Monday, but please ensure your supplies are all sorted out.

Chemistry 11:  After completing the mini WS on Scientific Notation, we read sections 1.1 to 1.5 in Hebdon.  We added items to Wednesday's map that were indicated in the reading.  We marked the KMT WS with an answer key too. 

Chemistry 12:  We checked the Rates of Reaction WS with an answer key, then we read sections 1.1 and 1.2 in Hebdon 12. Unit 1 # 1-9 are due tomorrow, Friday.


September 9

Chemistry 11:  We began with a short review of safety topics (classroom safety gear and fire drill procedures), then we dove into the Kinetic Molecular Theory.  We melted and solidified some Wood's metal, which has a melting point of approximately 65C.  We completed the KMT worksheet next, and this is due on Thursday.  In the last few minutes we reviewed Scientific Notation.  Please have your outline signed by your adult and show it to me in class.

Chemistry 12:  We reviewed safety, then destroyed a penny in an effort to learn about Rates of Reaction.  A WS titled Rates of Reaction was completed and is due on Thursday.  We went to get our textbooks today - please bring both texts to each class.  Please have your outline signed by your adult and show it to me in class.

 Science 9:  We began with a review of ionic compounds, then while Mr. Gale marked the Cell Division &Reproduction Test we completed a year-end review of Chemistry.  The practice tests were handed back and we marked the MC section together.  We will have a unit test on Friday.  In second half we made a placemat then read section 4.7 in the old Probe 9 to learn about Reproductive Technologies.  Page 136 # 1-8, 13, 15, and 16 are due next class.    This video shows part of the process for ICSI.  No Reproductive Technology info will be on Friday's unit test.

Science 8:  First, page 109 # 2,3, 5-13 was handed back - please read the comments on yours.   If I have not seen this, please complete it and give it to me.  We looked at some infected gums and spoke about the Innate Immune Response.  After making a placemat, we read pages 110 - 114  and wrote brief notes.  This clip explains how vaccines work.  Next was Cells and Systems Practice Test, which was partially marked today and handed back.  Click here to see the key.  Test next class.  In the second half we reviewed the Matter Unit by completing the Conduction Lab.

Science 9:  We began with a review of atoms/molecules/ions and pure/mixture.  Next we completed the Cell Division and Reproduction Practice Test, which is due next class.  Test on Friday.  


Science 8:  We began with a short discussion about the Innate and Acquired Immune Response. We listed a number of different pathogens on the flippit, on the final panel. Our categories were Viruses, Bacteria, Protists, and Other.   This clip explains the Immune System in a little more detail than we need.  Page 109 # 2,3,5-13 in sentences was collected, then we completed the Chemistry Year End Review assignment.  Test on Friday on the Biology Unit.


Monday, June 8

Science 8:  We reviewed speed and frequency first by watching this clip of a world record 50 m freestyle swimming race.  We read pages 103 to 105 to learn about the innate and acquired immune response, and we added brief notes to our flippits. Mr. Gale came around to look at the Measurement Year-End review, but he only made it half way around the room.  Due next class is page 109 # 2,3, 5-13.  

Science 9:  We began by reviewing Bohr Diagrams for both atoms and ions.  We then finished our project of making a Cross-Word puzzle using Microsoft Excel.  Only page 121 # 1-8, 12, 13 are due for Tuesday.

Friday, June 5, 2026

Science 9:  We went over page 121 (# 1-6 only, we will mark the rest on Monday.  Please have it finished.). We watched this clip about human embryonic development, then we drew a pedigree chart for ourself (or for a famous family:  Kardashians, Potters, Royal family, Simpsons).  This website shows fertility rate by country, and we had a short discussion about factors that affect fertility rate.    In the last portion of the class we worked on our Review Cross Word.  Only page 121 is due for Monday.  Please spend some time reviewing for your Science 9 Final Exam.

Science 8:  We reviewed body systems (can you trace the path that an oxygen molecule takes to get from your mouth to your big toe?) then we all created a flippit.  We read pages 100 to 103 and took brief notes on 4 ways to transmit pathogens, as well as the First Line of Defense in our immune system.  This video helped us understand how viruses can harm our cells.  We finished by brainstorming all the viruses we knew (influenza, pox, rhinovirus, herpes, corona ).  Please spend some time reviewing for your Science 8 Final Exam.

Science 9: After going through the page 116 assignment we completed Lab 3A: Sexual Reproduction in Flowers. We completed all the procedure and Analysis Questions d, f-j (analysis in sentences, please).  In the second half we took brief notes on Embryonic Development, then we read section 4.3 in the old Probe 9.  We started page 121 # 1-8, 12, 13.  All this work should be done for Friday, tomorrow.


Thursday, June 3rd

Science 9 :  We marked page 116 from last day first, then we did Lab 3A (Flower Dissection).  Analysis d, f-j are due next class.  We watched from 16:00 to 29:30 on this documentary about flowering plants, then we did some year end review.  First, we reviewed key terms from all the units we have covered, then we started a crossword puzzle.  No Homework is due for Friday - please spend 20 minutes after dinner reviewing work in your science binder. 

Science 8:  After going through page 89 # 1-5, we read pages 90 - 92 and completed page 95 # 1-5, 7-11, 13, 18 (half in sentences).  In the second half we reviewed ideas from back in January and February.  We measured mass and volume to the nearest one-tenth of the smallest division.  We performed an inquiry with a partner:  "Which has the greatest density:  iron, aluminum, or siderite?".  No Vibranium samples were available for testing.  The Measuring Year-End review assignment was completed last.  No Homework is due for Friday - please spend 20 minutes after dinner reviewing work in your science binder.

Sci 9 F:  We went through page 116, then wrote brief notes on Embryonic Development.  We read section 4.3 from the old Probe 9, and completed page 121 # 1-8, 12,13.  In the final minutes reviewed Chemistry from back in January/February.  Final Exam in about 2 weeks.

Sci 9 E:  We went through page 111, then we read section 4.2 (Female Reproductive System) and completed page 116 # 2-7,9,11,14.  See a link to page 116 on previous posts.  We went through the Karyotyping WS, then did a quiz on reproductive anatomy.

Sci 8:  First we went through the Vital Capacity lab and spoke about experimental design.  Next we wrote brief note on the Circulatory System, and we read pages 82-89.  Due next class is page 89 # 1-5 in sentences.

Science 9 Period B:  We began with a short review of the human reproductive system.  After reading  about the female reproductive system, then we completed page 111 # 1,3-8, 11 and page 116 # 2-7,9,11, & 14.  All in point form. Science 9 Period A:  We began with a short review of the human reproductive system.  After reading  about the male reproductive system, then we completed page 111 # 1,3-8, 11, all in point form. Science 8:  First we went through page 176 # 1-6, then we created a graph of Vital Capacity vs height for our class.  We discussed heart anatomy, then watched this short clip on the respiratory system

Science 9 F:  We reviewed the male reproductive system, then we read pages 108 to 110 from the old Probe 9.  The rest of the class was spent finishing the Karyotyping lab - we completed a second Karyotype and finished the lab hand-out. No time for our reproductive anatomy quiz today - we will try this Monday.

Science 9 E:  I collected page 78, then we completed the Human Reproductive Anatomy sheet.  In the second half we made a human karyotype, and will finish this on Monday.

Science 8:  To start we finished reading about the digestive system Pages 75-78, then we finished page 77 # 1-6.  Everyone measured their vital capacity and height, because the Research Manager wanted to know if vital capacity is dependent on height.  We began a scientific report, but did not finish it.  Only page 77 is due on Monday.  We also labelled and colored a respiratory system WS.

 Science 8:  After a short review of the digestive system we marked page 63 # 1-10 together.  We watched this clip on the Digestive System, then we wrote brief notes on Digestion.  Page 76 # 1-4 (in fine sentences) was completed once pages 70 - 74 were read.  In the second half we looked at Williamson's Lake Pond water using the compound microscopes.  We viewed and sketched two phytoplankton, two zoo plankton, and two invertebrates.

Science 9 (period FB):  We completed a short review of mitosis and meiosis, then we watched this clip on Meiosis.  The human reproductive Anatomy sheet was finished next (labelled and colored), and we went over the anatomy together.  On Friday we will have a quiz on human reproductive anatomy.  In the second half, we created a "typical" human karyotype, and completed up to number 7 on the Karyotype Lab hand-out.

Science 8:  We reviewed systems first, then we used the human model to talk about the parts of the Digestive System.  This course is mostly about the immune system, but recall from system theory that systems are connected to other systems; we should know a little about our digestive system.   We labelled an anatomy diagram and completed page 63 # 1-10 in point form; both are due on Thursday.

Science 9:  We reviewed key concepts in Meiosis, then we watched this clip.  We also completed page 78 from a hand-out (# 1-17, half in sentences and half in good point form).

Science 8:  We spoke about the calendar and how only 3 weeks of classes remain.  We prepared a placemat about Human Body Systems, then we read pages 54-57.  As we read, we listed the name of each system, the main function, and two organ names.  We then spent time finishing our Organelle Slide Deck on the laptops.  Be sure to learn key commands that allow you to work quickly [Command C = copy, Command V = Paste, Command Z = Undo, Command A =  select all, Shift-Command-4 to take a screenshot.]

Science 9:  We spoke about the calendar and how only 3 weeks of classes remain.  After reveiwing Sexual Reproduction, we read pages 49 - 51 and drew out the stages of meiosis.  We added a few brief notes, then we used laptop computers and finished making our Sexual Reproduction slide deck, which is not yet due.  See Friday's post for the organism you have been assigned, and the details of the assignment.

Science 9:  We began by going through the Asexual Reproduction Mini Lab WS from last class, then we wrote brief notes on Sexual Repoduction.  After reading pages 46-48, we made a short slide deck on Power Point to explain how sexual reproduction happens for an assigned species.   If you were away, you can work on this at home.  Research the species beside your initials below.  I also checked

 Science 8:  We reviewed "dilute" and "concentrated" first, by mixing blue food coloring with water.  Mr. Gale smashed some glassware for comedic effect.  We took brief notes on The Movement of Materials In/Out of the Cells, the we read pages 40-43. Due next class is page 49 # 1-5, 8,9,11 in sentences.  In the second half we created a slide deck on Power Point that shows the function and images of each organelle.

Science 9:  We wrote brief notes on Budding, Spore Formation, and Vegetative Reproduction as we read pages 29-33, then we completed page 35 # 1-4,6,8.  In the second half we completed the Asexual Reproduction mini lab, where we looked at prepared slides of hydra budding and paramecium undergoing binary fission.  We also found some moss sporangia in the forest, and made a squash slide to see the spores.

Science 9:  We went over a few Page 52 (Hand-out) problems together, then we learned about Asexual Reproduction.  After preparing a placemat, we read page 22 and 23 and sketched Figure 1.7A on our papers.  Time was provided to finish Page 52, which is due next class.  We completed a Flower Anatomy Sheet next, and finished off with a practice Quiz on page 52.   We marked this together before class was over.

Science 8:  First we spoke about mixtures and learned the words concentrated, dilute, and diffusion.  We marked page 39 from an answer key hand-out, then we completed a table on nutrients.  We focussed on proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and a non-nutrient: water.  These chemicals are important becuase they are the chemicals that make up our cells.

Science 8:  We reviewed a little using the back of the Intro to Microscopy Lab, then this was handed in.  We made a placemat, then read pages 31-34 and filled in our placemat with brief notes.  We completed page 39 # 1-4, 6-13, 22 in clear point form, then we did the Onion Cell Staining Lab. Once the Staining lab report was completed it was handed in.  The last 15 minutes was spent on the Volcano Spreadsheet. (not yet due).


Tuesday, May 12

Science 8:  After marking page 31 # 1-7 we completed the Microscopy Intro Lab.  Everyone had their own microscope, and they made a wet mount of a lower case "e" from the classifieds.  After "sketching the field" (this means drawing what you see within an orange-sized circle), the next task was to make a dry mount of 2 crossed human hairs. 

Science 9:  We started by looking at this clip of cells dividing, then we read pages 25 - 27.  Due next class is the Cell Division Cut and Paste. 

Monday, May 11

Science 9: We took brief notes on DNA, then we read pages 8-11 and completed page 13 # 1-7 which is due on Tuesday.  This clip show the division of cells in a colony of bacteria.  We spent the final 30 minutes on our Activity 1-B project from pages 16 & 17 in the Connections Textbook.

Science 8:  First we learned the anatomy of a Compound Microscope and we completed a WS to practice our new terms.  We took brief notes on cell anatomy, then read pages 24-30.  We completed page 31 # 1-7 in nice sentences.
