Chemistry 11:  After completing the Balancing Mini Review #3 WS, we did Lab 6B day 2.  All of the Questions and Calculations and Follow up Questions are due Thursday.  No Conclusion yet.  For those who are absent today:  Final mass of filter paper and CaCO3 combined is listed here: [ CM & KP:  2.96 g and NK 2.45)

Chemistry 12:  Today was spent reviewing solubility and completing the Practice Test, which is due Wednesday.  Unit 3 Test on Friday.

Science 8:  Today we reviewed atomic structure then everyone was assigned an atom for making a poster.  On the poster is needed a title, and image of the atom showing electrons, protons, and neutrons, and a few other items.  We will work on this poster on Wednesday.

Science 8:  We finished off the Heat Lab with a short demo of Convection.  We completed a Discussion section, where we explained how heat is transferred taking care to write about what happens to the atoms in each case.  I collected the Heat lab today.  In the second half we learned about static electric charge, and this gave us the background we needed to understand atomic structure.  We wrote notes titled Atomic Structure.  In the last few minutes we did pg 156 # 2 from the old Science Probe Text, but this is not yet due.

Chemistry 12:  We did the Solubility Review 2 after a short discussion about Hard Water (has a high concentration of Ca and Mg ions).   We took notes on Altering the Solubility of a Salt, the we read sectoin 3.10 and completed Unit 3 # 81-85.  The Practice Test was given out today, and it is due on Wednesday.  Solubility Test on Friday Nov 17th.

Chemistry 11:  Today I returned Lab 6A and the Moles Practice Test.  Everyone received a print out of their grades for Term 1.  We completed a mini review of predicting products, then we finished the long Stoichiometry WS, which is due on Tuesday.  In the second half we did Lab 6B, day 1.  You can begin Calculations # 1(a&b), 2,3, and 4.  Somewhere in your work, make an initial/change/final table.  Remember that only moles go into the tables.  The Lab is not due Tuesday but having some calculations completed will be helpful.  Click here to see the chem 11 assignment log.

Science 8:  We completed section B of the Heat Lab, Radiation.  Due next class is your graph of Temperature vs Time for heating water by radiation.  We watched this clip to try to understand why it is colder in the winter.

Chemistry 12:  Today we reviewed the difference between the solubility and Ksp by going through Unit 3 # 67.  We looked at #67 on page 99 and I asked these questions:

1) T/F: the Ksp of Mn(IO3)2 is 4.78 x 10^-3.   (... times 10 to the power of negative 3)

2) Write the Ksp expression for Mn(IO3)2.

3) If you needed a bottle with Mn2+ ions from our lab, what compound would you search for?

4) Determine the concentration of each ion in 0.0200 M KIO3.

5) Determine the concentration of each ion in 0.00478 M Mn(IO3)2

We added Unit 3 # 64, 65, 67 and 68 onto Unit 3 # 56-63, then we did the WS titled Solubility Review.

Chemistry 11:  After completing the Balancing Minireview WS #2, we learned the principles of Stoichiometry (Read pgs 123 and 124).  Due next class is the Stoichiometry WS (Moles only).

Science 8:  We reviewed chemistry ideas first (definition of chemistry, units for volume, changes of state, density of an apple).  Then we learned how heat moves in 3 different ways:  Conduction, convection, and radiation.  In the Heat Lab, we tested out the conductivity of 5 types of metals in a controlled experiment, then we drew a bar graph for our data and we designed a "best ever" cooking pot.  In the last few minutes time was given to complete work from Friday:  pg 263 # 1-6, Activity 7-6, WS titled Mini Density Review.  Click here to see the assignment log

Chemistry 11:  After completing balancing mini review #1 we learned how to determine the reaction category by seeing the reactants only.  This allow us to generate reaction products by ourselves.  After doing pg 118 # 67 verbally as a group, we completed the Predicting Products WS, which is due Tuesday.  We also went over conclusions for Lab 6A, to make sure that all of the objectives have been addressed.  This means including values that were mentioned in the objective.  Both the lab and the WS are due Tuesday.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 12: We learned how to separate mixtures of ions today, then we read sectoin 3.5 and completed Unit 3 # 29-33 (these are due Tuesday).   The WS titled "Solubility Review" was also given out today.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Science 8:  Today I collected pg 251 and 253 from Tuesday.  We reviewed Density a little, then did Lab 7-4 (all procedure steps as well as "What did you Learn" questions # 1-4).  In the final minutes we started the Density Mini Review.  Lab 7-4 and the Density Mini Review will be due Monday. Click here to see the assignment log

Chemistry 12:  We did Lab 19C today - the lab will be due Monday.  I did not collect Unit 3 # 42 - 51, which was due today.  Click here to see the assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  I collected the WS titled "Writing Reaction Equations".  We reviewed balancing, then completed a Balancing WS to practice our skills.  This animation shows that chemical reactions are simply the rearrangement of atom to form new products, and that no atoms are lost or gained - this is the reasoning behind balancing chemical reactions.  We took notes on the Categories of reactions.  There was a short discussion about adding CO2 to the air by burning fuels - we looked at this graphic to understand global warming.  In the second half we did Lab 6A (Day 1 of 2), then we completed any 12 from Unit 6 # 66.  Only the Balancing WS and U6 # 66 is due Friday. Click here to see the assignment log.
