Science 10: We began by going over the answers to page 349 # 1-9, and this was collected. We watched the first 27:57 minutes of "Giants", a documentary about the Voyager Space Probe. In the second half we reviewed cell anatomy and mitosis. This clip shows real videograph of cell division occuring. We completed the Cell Anatomy WS and the Mitosis cut and paste. Test on Astronomy on Monday, so please spend some time reviewing. Practice test on Friday.

Science 8: Today we began with a short discussion about fibre, a kind of carbohydrate that is not digestible, and whose proper name is cellulose. We looked at the Canada Food Guide "plate", that shows how a beneficial diet is about half vegetables and fruit - this provides a lot of cellulose. Chemistry 12: We began with a short review of pH and pOH, then completed 20G. All the questions and follow-up questions are due Thursday. Science 8: We listed all the food we ate from Sunday lunch to now, including snacks. We learned about major biomolecule groups (proteins, fats, carbohydrates) and identified which foods gave us these nutrients. We watched this clip about the digestive system, then read pages 64 - 69 in our texts. The final minutes were spent finishing the Digestive System diagram (label and color). Science 10: After a short review of triangulation, we played with spectroscopes to see the colored bands of light produced by light sources (fluorescent light fixure, snow, He, Ne). We read pages 341 - 346 and wrote brief notes on each of the properties that astronomers use to categorize stars (luminosity, color, temperature, composition, mass). We completed activity 4-C on page 348, which is due next class.
Chemistry 12: We wrote brief notes about pH and pOH, then we read page 134 - 139 and completed U4 # 49-52. In the final portion of class we worked on Lab 20G, which is due Friday. Make sure to read the pre-lab and post-lab discussion for Lab 20G.
Friday, April 25th
Chemistry 12: We finished the procedure for 20G today. Try to have Calculations for Parts I and II completed for Monday. Ensure that all Unit 4 problems from Hebdon are up to date - see previous posts.
Science 8: Page 49 # 1-5, 7-12 was collected at the start of class. We finished the Gummy Bear lab, then we used the human model to learn about the anatomy of the digestive system. The Gummy Bear lab is due Monday, and needs to be handed in.
Science 10: Additions to your Telescope Spreadsheet:
a). Make a clone of your spreadsheet on a new tab. Make all adjustments below on your clone.
b)Add a picture of each telescope. Images need to be formatted, so they fit into the document in a useful way.
c) Use color to make your spreadsheet easy to read.

Science 8: We reviewed cellular respiration and photosynthesis, then we wrote brief notes on Movement across a Cell Membrane. We read pages 40 - 45 (like usual, we read the titles and subtitles, and found the last word to read) and completed page 49 # 1-5 and 7-12 in sentences. Second half we completed the Gummy Bear Lab. Due next class is page 49 and the table on Human Body Systems. Thank you Ms. Rodman for your tremendous efforts with our class!
Chemistry 12: We completed Lab 20G, as much as possible, today. Titration extravaganza. Nothing is due for Friday, but please ensure that you have completed all the textbook questions detailed in previous blog posts.

Science 10: We went through answers to the Galaxy WS, then handed it in. We completed a mini-lab to review optics concepts: convex lenses, concave mirrors, diameter, images, focal length, electromagnetic spectrum, etc. We read about telescopes (pages 322 to 325) then watched this short clip about the James Webb Telescope. We had a short discussion about the value and expense of such a telescope. Laptops were used to create a spreadsheet of important telescopes using Microsoft Excel. The column headings are : Telescope Name, Type of EMR, Location, Year Built, Who built it, diameter. Save the spreadsheet with a useful file name to your OneDrive in your Science 10 Folder. No homework, except to go outside on clear nights and look at constellations (Bootes, Big Dipper, Little Dipper, Leo, and Cassiopia are seen easily from 9:00 pm until midnight.

Science 8: The Energy WS was marked first, followed by a short review of cell anatomy. Then we wrote brief notes on Cellular Respiration and Photosynthesis and watched this clip to see the more detail about each process. In the last 25 minutes we read our textbook (pages 54-59) and created a placemat for Body Systems. 11 rows by 3 columns. Column headings: System Name, Key Function, 2 examples of organs. Science 10: We completed a short review on our pages 313 # 1-9 before handing it in. Time was given to finish Lab 5.2, the Force of Gravity Lab, and this was handed in too. We learned how to draw free body diagrams, then completed a WS to help us practice these skills. In the second half we completed Activity 14.2, the Star Map Activity.
Next week some of you will be away for a Band Trip. This is our approximate plan:
Tuesday April 22: Read about Galaxies (page 326 - 331) and complete the Galaxy WS. Finish Lab 14B (Star Map Activity). Try the Scientific Notation Practice WS.
Wednesday April 23: Review the Electromagnetic Spectrum. Read page 322 to 325, then view this video on the James Webb Telescope. Chemistry 12: We took brief notes on Strong vs Weak Acids (and bases) today, then read section 4.6. We completed U4 # 21-27, then finished Lab 20B (Due Tuesday, all Questions and Follow-up Questions, no conclusion). I checked Unit 4 # 15-19 for accuracy. In the second half we learned about Kw, Ka and Kb and read sections 4.7 and 4.8. Due Tuesday are all the above problems as well as # 28-32.
Science 8: We reviewed cell anatomy first, and marked the microscope WS. We took brief notes on Energy, then we completed the WS titled "18.3". This video clip shows the different forms of energy. We went see the enviro fair, then completed an inquiry to determine which stain best shows the anatomy inside onion root cells. The Energy WS is due on Tuesday.

Science 8: We reviewed microscope anatomy first, then learned about the 5 charactieristics of Living things. We also reviewed cell anatomy and watched this clip. In the second half we made dry mounts of criss-crossing hairs (everyone donated 1 strand of hair). We drew the field and wrote the magnification below our drawing. Science 10: We wrote brief notes on the Solar System after discussing the weekends' viewing. Orion is will soon be impossible to see. We made a placemat and wrote 3 key ideas for each planet as we read section 12.4 on the old Science Probe textbook. This task is due on Tuesday. Chemistry 12: I collected the Solutions Practice Test today, as well as any missing Lab 19Cs. We reviewed general acid and base knowledge, and learned about the Hydronium ion. We read 4.1 to 4.3 and completed Unit 4 # 1-10. In the second half the practice tests were returned and time was provided to mark the MC section and ask questions. We took brief notes on Bronsted-Lowry acids and bases, and continued with section 4.4. The Chapter 4 material is due Monday. The Solubility Test will be on Friday. Science 10: The Practice Test on the Energy Unit was collected at the start of class, and Mr. Gale marked the Written Response Section. We completed a WS on the effects of energy transformations on people, then spent time with the laptops completing our mini presentations from Monday. In the final minutes we marked the Energy Practice Test Multiple Choice section. Our Energy Test will be on Thursday.
Chemistry 12: Lab 19C was collected at the start of class today. We completed the Solubility Practice Test today, and this is due tomorrow. Test on Friday.
Science 8: We completed lab 6-4, The Cow's Eye Dissection. Nice work! Analyze questions # 1-3 and Conclude and Apply questions 1,2 are due Wednesday, in fine sentences where appropriate. Friday we'll do the Waves and Optics Test.

Science 10: First, we went over the answer to the WS titled Law of Conservation of Energy. Then we read pages 250-253. With a partner we researched a natural process [lighting, wind, hurricanes, tides, avalanches, forest fires, photosynthesis].
Chemistry 12: We looked at some slides of coral reefs, limestone mountains and karst landscape to understand the chemistry around "Hard Water". We read section 3.9, then completed the WS titled Review of Solubility 2, which is due Monday. Lab 19C is due Tuesday. Test on Wednesday or Friday.

Science 8: Page 210 # 1-7 was collected today. We reviewed human eye anatomy then wrote a quiz. In the second half we read pages 216 - 225 about optical devices that extend human vision. On a placemat we wrote brief notes on each one, making a sketch and showing the location of each mirror, lens, or prism. We also included one ray path, and the location of the observer and the object. This is due on Friday, except the Optical Fibre and Laser section. Science 10: page 207 # 1-7 was handed in first. We finished the Solar Energy video from last class, then we wrote brief notes on the Law of Conservation of Energy. After reading pages 206 to 208, we completed a WS on the Law of Conservation of Energy. In the second half we began the astronomy unit with a review of the Solar System. Be sure to get outside this week to see the constellation Orion, as it will soon be impossible to see.
