Chemistry 11  (AE and DH) :  The moles Practice Test was handed in first.  We completed the Moles Unit Test today, then spent time ensuring that these items are complete:   U5 # 78-82, 87, 88 and the WS Writing Chemical Reaction Equations.

Science 8:  After a short review of elements we watched this clip about Mercury, the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.  We spent time completing page 259 # 1-8, 10 and page 265 # 1-3, which are due on Monday.  We began Lab 10-3 by making a kit of solutions.

Science 8:   First we went through the Energy WS (# 1,2 only), then we spent some time learning about Elements.  Everyone was given their own periodic table, and we completed a placemat and observed some sample of elements.   This video showed the element "Gold" is some detail.  The Period Table of Videos has a segment for each element.   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Chemistry 11:  Test next class on the Moles Unit.  We began with a review of key terms as well as some CLE info (certificates/degrees/diplomas/CofQ's).  Everyone was assigned a dilution to make from concentrated stock solution.  With a partner students calculated the volume of stock solution to take, then this was diluted with water to create the final diluted solution.    The remainder of the class was spent finishing/correcting the Moles Practice test, which we did on Friday.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

 Science 8:   We reviewed changes of state and the Kinetic Molecular Theory first, the we took brief notes on Energy.  We read pages 390 to 394 in the really old Science Probe 9 book, then we started the Energy WS but this is not due Tuesday.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Science 8:   We reviewed changes of state and the Kinetic Molecular Theory first, then a little time was given to finish the WS titled Measurement Intro.  We then completed the density lab, where we measured and calculated to find the density of  4 materials (a metal, a non metal solid, water, and a colored mystery liquid).    Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Chemistry 11:  We learned how to make a standard solution today.  After a short demo, everyone made their own unique solution with a partner.  Everyone wrote a lab report with the usual sections (Purpose, Materials, Procedure, etc., and we added a few questions on to the end to practice molarity skills (60c, 68, 69).  This is due Friday.  In the second half we took brief notes on Chemical Reactions, then we read 6.1 and 6.2, and finally we completed a WS titled Writing Chemical Reaction Equations.  We will do the Moles Unit Practice Test on Friday, and a Moles test on the double block next week.   Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Chemistry 11:  We learned how to make a standard solution today.  After a short demo, everyone made their own unique solution with a partner.  Everyone wrote a lab report with the usual sections (Purpose, Materials, Procedure, etc., and we added a few questions on to the end to practice molarity skills (60c, 68, 69).  This is due Friday.  In the second half we took brief notes on Chemical Reactions, then we read 6.1 and 6.2, and finally we completed a WS titled Writing Chemical Reaction Equations.  We will do the Moles Unit Practice Test on Friday, and a Moles test on the double block next week.

Chemistry 11: We took brief notes on Molar Concentration, then we read pages 86 - 89 and completed Unit 5 # 59 and 61-64.  A little time was spent on Lab 4D, which is due next class.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  We melted some Wood's metal as part of a discussion about the Kinetic Molecular Theory.  After writing some brief notes together, we read pates 246 - 249 and completed page 249 # 1-6 in sentences.  These are due on Thursday.  This PhET animation shows the KMT visually quite well.  We finished with a short measuring exercise, but this is not due Thursday.   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Chemistry 11:  I collected Lab 4B and last day's Hebdon assignment:  # 46 and letter c from 36-39.  We completed Lab 4D today, and this lab will be due Wed/Thurs next week.  We finished with a short quiz on # 46 and letter c from 36-39.  

Science 8:  After we wrote the Cells and Systems test, we completed a Binder Check.  A little time was provided to complete the DIY Cells and Systems Review.

Science 8:   The Flippit and page 109 were handed back and an answer key was provided for page 109.  We practiced partner review for short while, and discussed useful techniques for studying with a partner (ample wait time when asking questions, repetition, hints [first letter,  rhymes with with, etc], lists).  After completing the practice test we did a mini lab on measuring mass with a triple beam balance.  In the final minutes we went through the answers to the practice test, and watched this video clip about the immune system.  On Friday we will complete a test on the Biology unit (everything we have done, except volume and mass measuring)   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Science 8:  Today we reviewed the immune system and we watched this clip about Vaccines.  The Flippit and page 109 was handed in.   We constructed a DIY worksheet to review our Biology Unit (everything we have learned so far).  Students had to make 2 multiple choice questions, one labelling question, and 2 open ended questions using ideas from our biology unit.  No need to answer the questions, someone else will do that for you.  Test on Friday.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Monday, October 6th

Chemistry 11:  We made a moles graphic on our databooklet to help with more complex calculations.  We used the graphic to complete unit 5 # 22 and 24 (5 problems from each, 10 total). Science 8:  We began with a review of the Heart, then we wrote a practice quiz on Heart Anatomy.  We spent time finishing page 95 # 2-5,7-11 (half in sentences), then we made a flippit.  To learn about the immune system, we read pages 100-105 and filled in our Immune system flippit with brief notes.  This clip shows how mucus and cilia work together in the trachea to catch pathogens before they travel deep into our lungs.  In the final 30 minutes we learned about volume, measuring technique, and completed the Volume WS.  Only page 95 is due on Friday.
