Science 10: Today we went over the Energy WS and I gave 1 more day for you to complete #4. We learned how to balance chemical equation, which represent chemical change in symbol format. A Balancing WS was assigned, as well as pg 133 # 1-6, and both of these are due Wednesday. We watched this clip of the Aluminum smelting process.

Careers 10, P56, Session 3 of 4, Hathorn
Caleb came by to tell us about the Trades Sampler. After a short review of Post Secondary options including trades, we used Microsoft Excel on the laptops to create a budget for 1 year from Sept 1 to August 31. You and your partner were given a scenario, and you are to create one spreadsheet (or two).
a) Make a Revenue section, that shows your earnings
b) Make an Expenses section, that shows how you will spend your money
c) Use the equations function to convert monthly costs to yearly costs, and to find the Net Funds at the bottom
d) Create a text box that allows you to write a brief description of your budget and explain your costs and revenue
e) Save the Excel to your Onedrive. Print to PDF, and add the PDF to your Grade 10 Portfolio with a useful title.
f) On myBlueprint, left tab Work, choose Occupations and search for 3 different occupations that look interesting to you at this point. Read the profile of each. Add these to your Grade 10 Portfolio.
g) Complete Tuesday's and Monday's tasks. Ensure your Grade 10 Portfolio contains a PDF of your Resume.
h) In the second half we created a job application cover letter using a formal Block Letter Style to one of these businesses:
Lortap (wood manufacturing (doors, windows, cabinets, custom furniture)
BC Hydro Visitor's Centre (give Dam tours, help visitors)
Loki Tree Service (Removing/trimming trees)
RMR Pipecoaster
Denny's (serving, busing, dishwashing, kitchen prep)
Mackenzie Dental (sterilizing person, clean-up, phone duties)

Careers 8 P78, Avery, Hour #3 of 4.
We started with a short review of Trades and followed this with a short discussion on other options for High School Graduates.We spoke about how training and certification for Trades requires a reasonable level of writing, reading, and math, and how its important to approach school as an opportunity to learn these things.
The middle portion of class was spent on Business Speaking skills.

Science 10: We started off with short lesson on Polyatomic ions and did a mini practice WS - answers were available at the side counter and you were expected to check your own. We spent time finishing pg 182 # 1-11, which is due next class. Our class finished with a short lesson on chemical reactions. We observed Sodium reacting with water, and looked at an animation that showed particles colliding and forming new partnerships.

Science 10: We learned how Ionic compounds are brittle and cannot be melted at home because the ions are held together very tightly. Covalent compounds can be melted at home and are usually flexible - the molecules that make them up are not bound to each other with much force. We practiced names and formulas of ionic compounds, read section 7.2, and started pg 182 # 1-11(this is not due Tuesday). In the last 15 minutes we did a quiz on Chemistry topics we have covered so far.

We went over the BC graduation requirements and did a little paper mapping of our most favoured Grade 11 and 12 course list plus alternate #1 and alternate #2. We then logged onto myBlueprint and completed the timetables in the Highschool left-tab. View our school's website to see a list of courses likely offered next year.
We looked at 2 sample resume's to determine the author's approximate age. The remainder was spent updating or making on your resume on myBlueprint.

Science 10: pg 174 # 1-11 was handed back - nice work! Complete this and turn it in asap if you have not yet given it to me or if it was partially complete from before. We did this practice on naming and writing formulas of ionic compounds. Due Monday is pg 174 #12.
Thursday, February 6
Science 10: pg 174 # 1-11 was collected today, after you were asked if there were any questions. We made a placemat on the Categories of Compounds, and we observed some Ionic and Molecular compounds and read pg 118 to 122 in our new Science 10 text. In the second half everyone was assigned an atom or ion and everyone made a poster showing the atomic structure (number and placement of electrons, protons, and neutrons) as well as Table 1 from pg 165 in the old Probe 10 Textbook. We finished off with a lesson on writing the proper IUPAC names and formulas of ionic compounds.
Tuesday, February 4th
Science 10: After we self marked pg 156 # 3-6, we did the Density Lab. Measurements were taken, and calculations were done to determine the density of a metallic solid, a non=metallic solid, water, and a green or blue liquid. Data is where measurements go, and Calculations is where you show your math statements. Your Results section is where you make a tidy list of all the density values you determined.

Science 10: After going through the key expectations in our Science 10 class we reviewed atomic structure and drew Bohr Diagrams for Atomic # 1-20. pg 156 # 3-6 from the old Probe 10 was completed (due Tuesday) and we finished Lab 6A (analysis a-d in sentences) . When Magnesium reacts with oxygen in air the Magnesium atoms give electrons away to Oxygen atoms, and an ionic compound of Magnesium Oxide is formed - we watched this, or actually, saw it from the corner of our eyes. Super bright! On the Double Block day I want to check your supplies - paper, graph paper, calculator, ruler, pens and pencils, binder. Page 152 was handed back - it was marked for accuracy and quality writing.
