Science 8:  We began with short review, then we did a Measuring Review Activity.  After, time was given to finish Lab 10-3 (Analyze # 1-4, and Conclude and Apply # 1-5), which is due Friday.  We read section 6.2 from a Hand-out, and we did pg 192 # 2-12 also from the hand-out.  pg 192 is due Friday too.  In the final portion of class we learned about the differences between metals and non metals.

Chemistry 11:  Many of us were away at the Discover UBCO field trip today.  During class, time was provided to finish lab 2D , as well as Unit 4 Exercises # 1-5.  We learned about Hydrates today too, and Exercises # 6 & 7 were added on.  We also did a practice quiz on Ionic Names and Formulas.

Chemistry 11:  We started with a short discussion about paper chromatography, and we spoke about Lab 2D.  This clip shows Gas Chromatography, a common technique in medical and lab settings.  We discussed naming and writing formulas for ionic compounds, then we read pgs 65 to 72 in Hebdon.  Due next class is Unit IV Exercises # 1-5.

Science 8:  We set up lab 10-3, then we did all the procedure and Analyze # 1-4 and Conclude and Apply # 1-5, all in sentence format. Only Analyze # 1-4 are due Thursday.

Chemistry 11:  Thanks Ms. Pynn for running today's class!  Lab 3A was handed in today.  We began with a Mini Review of Density, then we did Lab 2D, which taught us about paper chromatography as well as gave us good practice with significant figures.  At the end of class we did another Measurement and Sig Fig quiz, just like Friday last week.  For Tuesday, have Lab 2D finished (all questions, follow-up questions, no conclusion).  Also, you are encouraged to come with me on the Discover UBCO Field trip next Wednesday - sign up in the office and get a permission form.

Science 8:  We started by reviewing the heating curve for Sulfur from Tuesday, then we did a short scavenger hunt through the Periodic Table of the Elements.  We looked at pure Sodium (watch this clip about Na) and watched this clip about Gold.  Just before break we made a kit of solutions for Lab 7-4, which we will do on Tuesday.  In the second half we finished pg 259 # 1-10, which is due Tuesday.  In the last part we learned about Convection after reviewing the KMT (try this animation to review KMT).

Chemistry 11:  Today we reviewed how to calculate density and tried a problem like this for review.  We spent time finishing Lab 3A (Questions and calculations # 1,4 as well as Follow-up questions 2,3, no conclusion) which is due Thursday.

Science 8:  We reviewed density calculations and tried a problem like this.  I provided heating curve data for a mystery substance and we made a line graph of Temperature vs. Time.  This allowed us to determine if the mystery substance was wax, iron, or sulfur.  We finished off with pg 259 # 1-5, which is due on Wednesday.

Chemistry 11:  We began with a short review of significant figures.  We wrote notes on the Particles that make up matter, then we read section 3.3 in Hebdon, and # 33 - 44 was completed (and is due Tuesday).   Lab 3A is not due, we will spend time on it Tuesday.  We finished with a quiz on Significant Figures and Measurement.  Please bring a calculator and ruler every class.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log

Science 8:  After a short review of Elements, we did the Density Lab.  We made various measurements and calculated the density of 4 materials, showing our math statements clearly.   Please bring a calculator and ruler every class.  Click here to see the Grade 8 assignment log.

Chemistry 11:  I collected the Density Lab today.  We began with this review of measurement, then we prepared Lab 3A.  This lab could be accomplished at home.  We completed all of the procedure, and did the Calculations # 1 & 4 and Follow up Questions. # 2 & 3.  We will have a quiz on Measurement and Sig Figs on Monday. Click here to see the Assignment Log

Science 8:  We began by reviewing the Heating Curve for Water, and we drew two more heating curves (one for sulfur, and one for canola oil).  A little time was spent on a practice quiz on Measurement.  On Monday we will do a similar quiz.  We had a short discussion about Elements, (they cannot be broken down chemically, because they are made of 1 kind of atom), and we observed 13 elements and recorded their names, symbols, and properties).  Click here to see the Grade 8 Assignment Log.
