Science 9:  Today I collected permission forms for Thursday's fieldtrip to the Water Treatment Plant and the Sewage Treatment Plant.  We did our Ecology Unit Test today.

Chemistry 12:  We started with a mini review of sections 5.1 to 5.4, then we took notes on Electrochemical Cells.  We read both sections 5.8 and 5.9, and completed 34-37.

Chemistry 12:  Today we learned how to balance full electrochemical cells.  Due Monday is Unit 5 # 24 (choose 9, ensuring that 4 are basic and 1 is a disproportionation reaction).

 Chemistry 12:  The Oxidation Number WS was collected today.  We began with a short discussion about spontenaiety, and we learned how to use our databooklet to determine if a reaction will occur, or not.  We read section 4.3, and completed # 7-14.  A Mini review WS was given out after that.  In the second half we learned how to balance half cells, and we completed any 10 problems from Unit 5 # 19

Science 9:  On Wednesday, we did pg 100 # 1-15 from the old Science Probe 10, which will be due on Friday.   We also learned about Scientific Notation, and began a short lab where we calculated the carbon stored in a tree.  We will have a Test on Biogeochemical Cycling on Monday, and a field trip on Thursday to the water treatment and sewage treatment plant.

 Science 9:  We handed in the Bar Graphs today that showed the Carbon storage for each biome.  We took notes on the Nitrogen Cycle, read section 4.3 in the old Probe 10 textbook, and completed pg 95 # 2-10, 15, and 17 (Due Wednesday).  

Chemistry 12:  We started off the Electrochemistry Unit by constructing a Copper half cell and a Zinc Half Cell, and connecting them to make a cell that produced nearly 1 V.  We read 5.1 and completed # 1,2.  In the second half we learned how to do oxidation number, which is a technique that is useful in determining which species are oxidized and which are reduced.  The Oxidation number WS is due Thursday.

 Science 9:  Today learned about the Carbon stored in soil.  We watched this clip about decomposing pumpkin to observe the bioturbation that occurred and to help us consider the components of soil (water, detritius, rock fragments, bacteria, fungi, and invertebrates.  We also watched this clip to help us visualize the decrease in volume of biomass, to help us reason that CO2 is leaving a compost pile.  We made a bar graph using this data to show Carbon Storage vs Biome.  

Chemistry 12:  Today we wrote our Acids and Bases Unit Test.  Well done!  No homework in Chemistry 12 this weekend.

 Chemistry 12:  We started with a mini review of Buffers, then we took notes on Metal and Non-metal oxides.  We finished the Practice Test, which is due by Friday.  This TED Talk by Triona McGrath explains why Ocean water pH has dropped in past few decades.  We have an Acids and Bases test on Friday, tomorrow. 

 Science 9:  We began with a survey of local tree species, and you made a guide to help people identify cedars, yews, firs, pines, spruces, maples, mountain ash, and birch.  We spent time learning about 5 carbon sinks:  biomass, fossil fuels, atmosphere, ocean water, and limestone in the Earth's crust.  We finished by reading "The Largest Migration on Earth", an article about carbon cycling within the ocean.  Click here to learn about salps.  At the end of the class, I collected pg 91 that was assigned on Tuesday.
