 Science 8:  We reviewed atomic structure, then we learned safety considerations and how to light a bunsen burner.  Time was provided to finish Lab 7-4,which is due on Friday.  The Atom poster is also due on Friday.  In the second half we completed the PopCan lab, and we graphed a heating curve for a mystey substance.  I collected the heating curve, and the popcan lab will be collected on Friday. Chemistry 11:    We started with a minireview of Predicting Products, then we learned how to use Initial/Change/Final tables to solve stoichiometry problems.  The WS titled  Stoichiometry using Limiting Reactant is due next class.  Lab 6A is also due next class.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log. 

Grade 8 Volleyball:  Practice Wednesday at 5:15 and Friday at 3:20.  Next League is on Thursday, November 13th in Shuswap (Roster announeced at the Nov 12th Practice.

Chemistry 11:  We began with a mini review of balancing chemical equations.  We then finished our notes on Categories of Chemical reactions and used our skills to categorize the reactions in Unit 6 # 66 and 67 (any 30 problems total).  The first part of Lab 6A was completed, and then we finished the WS titled Predicting Products.    All but Lab 6A are due on Friday.   Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  After a short review of elements and energy categories, the Density Mini REview and 6.2 Worksheets were collected.  We finished Lab 10-3 (All Analyze and Conclude and Apply Questions).  We then took notes on Atomic Structure, and observed how a beam of electrons can be made from a Cathode Ray Tube.  We finished # 2-5, 7-10, 12, 13 on a WS titled Page 208.  This short clip shows atomic structure quite clearly.    Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Chemistry 11  (AE and DH) :  The moles Practice Test was handed in first.  We completed the Moles Unit Test today, then spent time ensuring that these items are complete:   U5 # 78-82, 87, 88 and the WS Writing Chemical Reaction Equations.

Science 8:  After a short review of elements we watched this clip about Mercury, the only metal that is liquid at room temperature.  We spent time completing page 259 # 1-8, 10 and page 265 # 1-3, which are due on Monday.  We began Lab 10-3 by making a kit of solutions.

Science 8:   First we went through the Energy WS (# 1,2 only), then we spent some time learning about Elements.  Everyone was given their own periodic table, and we completed a placemat and observed some sample of elements.   This video showed the element "Gold" is some detail.  The Period Table of Videos has a segment for each element.   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Chemistry 11:  Test next class on the Moles Unit.  We began with a review of key terms as well as some CLE info (certificates/degrees/diplomas/CofQ's).  Everyone was assigned a dilution to make from concentrated stock solution.  With a partner students calculated the volume of stock solution to take, then this was diluted with water to create the final diluted solution.    The remainder of the class was spent finishing/correcting the Moles Practice test, which we did on Friday.  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Chemistry 11:  We learned how to make a standard solution today.  After a short demo, everyone made their own unique solution with a partner.  Everyone wrote a lab report with the usual sections (Purpose, Materials, Procedure, etc., and we added a few questions on to the end to practice molarity skills (60c, 68, 69).  This is due Friday.  In the second half we took brief notes on Chemical Reactions, then we read 6.1 and 6.2, and finally we completed a WS titled Writing Chemical Reaction Equations.  We will do the Moles Unit Practice Test on Friday, and a Moles test on the double block next week.

Chemistry 11:  I collected Lab 4B and last day's Hebdon assignment:  # 46 and letter c from 36-39.  We completed Lab 4D today, and this lab will be due Wed/Thurs next week.  We finished with a short quiz on # 46 and letter c from 36-39.  

Science 8:  After we wrote the Cells and Systems test, we completed a Binder Check.  A little time was provided to complete the DIY Cells and Systems Review.

Science 8:   The Flippit and page 109 were handed back and an answer key was provided for page 109.  We practiced partner review for short while, and discussed useful techniques for studying with a partner (ample wait time when asking questions, repetition, hints [first letter,  rhymes with with, etc], lists).  After completing the practice test we did a mini lab on measuring mass with a triple beam balance.  In the final minutes we went through the answers to the practice test, and watched this video clip about the immune system.  On Friday we will complete a test on the Biology unit (everything we have done, except volume and mass measuring)   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Science 8:  Today we reviewed the immune system and we watched this clip about Vaccines.  The Flippit and page 109 was handed in.   We constructed a DIY worksheet to review our Biology Unit (everything we have learned so far).  Students had to make 2 multiple choice questions, one labelling question, and 2 open ended questions using ideas from our biology unit.  No need to answer the questions, someone else will do that for you.  Test on Friday.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Science 8:  We began with a review of the Heart, then we wrote a practice quiz on Heart Anatomy.  We spent time finishing page 95 # 2-5,7-11 (half in sentences), then we made a flippit.  To learn about the immune system, we read pages 100-105 and filled in our Immune system flippit with brief notes.  This clip shows how mucus and cilia work together in the trachea to catch pathogens before they travel deep into our lungs.  In the final 30 minutes we learned about volume, measuring technique, and completed the Volume WS.  Only page 95 is due on Friday. Science 8:  In the first half we learned about the respiratory system.  The human torso model showed us many structures, then we read pages 90 to 92 before completing the anatomy diagram and answering page 91 # 1-6 in sentences.  While students worked, everyone measured their vital capacity with the spirometer and measured their height as well.  The Scientific Question we are asking is this:  "Is lung volume larger for taller people"?   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Chemistry 11:  Period D spent time reviewing the options available to RSS students upon graduation (trades school, college, workforce, university, flight school, justice institute,...) and well as different education pathways (certificate = 1 yr, diploma = 2/3 years,  Red Seal = 4 years, Degree = 4 yrs).  We then went to the Alberta Post Secondary Fair to speak with the recruiters.  In the final minutes we reviewed names and formulas of ionic and covalent compounds and we prepared Lab 2E.   In Period A we took brief notes on The Mole, then read the start of Unit 5 and completed Exercises # 6, 7 (these are not due, and are not on next day's Unit Test .  Click here to see the Chemistry 11 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  We went over the answers to page 21 # 1-5, then we performed a short inquiry.  "Does diffusion occur faster in hot water, or cold water?" was the question, and everyone worked with an assigned partner to design an experiment, carry it out, and record data and observations.  We finished by listing the single independent variable (the condition that the scientist changes - temperature in this case) and all the controlled factors (every other aspect must be the same for each trial, to be fair).   In the process we learned our way around room 313, practiced being safe and focused, and worked on our science communication skills.  The lab was handed in at the end of class. Science 8:  After a short discussion on how to enter a classroom, we learned the difference between "Concentrated" and "Dilute".  We took notes on how materials cross the cell membrane, then we read pages  40 to 44, then started page 39 # 1-5,8,9,11 but these are note due.   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.


Friday, Sept 12th.

Chemistry 11: We began with a  WS titled "Measurement to the nearest one-tenth of the Smallest Division", which is the same as Unit 2 # 48, 49, and 50. There are answers in your Hebdon text on page 254 and 255.  We then read about naming and writing formulas for elements, ions, and ionic compounds (pages 65 - 72). We completed # 1, 4 (any 10), and 5(any 10) from the exercises embedded in this reading.  Both of the above tasks are due Monday.  Remaining time was spent working on Lab 2D, which is due on Tuesday. 

Science 8: We completed a mini practice quiz on Microscope parts and Cell anatomy, then we learned about the 5 characteristics of living things.  We watched this video clip from the Amoeba Sisters, then we read pages 8-12 in our textbook.  Due Monday is page 21 # 1-7 in sentences.  

Thursday, Sept 11th.

Chemistry 11:  We started with a short review of key ideas (parallax error, meniscus, significant figures) , then we dove into Lab 2D.  New today is the idea that when dividing, the final value can only contain as many signficant figures as the fewest in all the values involved in the calculation.  For example, if a 4 digit measurment is divided by a 3 digit measurement, then the final value can only be shown with 3 digits.  We finished all the procedure, Questions and Calculations, and Follow-up Questions.  In the final 30 minutes we learned about writing names and formulas of ionic compounds.

Science 8:  We began by going through page 31 # 1-6 (in sentences), then we learned about the parts of a microscope and how to care and handle them properly.  With our partner we used classroom glassware to measure 90 mL of water two different ways.  In the last 30 minutes we read about Cell Theory (page 31 and 32) and completed page 39 # 1, 2, 4-10 in sentences.   Page 39 will be due on Wednesday, and you'll be given some time on Tuesday to finish it.    Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Chemistry 11:  After an intro to Scientific Notation WS we added to our Chemistry Notes from Thusday.  We filled in the last column of the 3 column table.  We read through the Lab Safety Rules in our textbook (pg vi and vii), then completed a short practice safety quiz - this is not due Monday.   

Science 8:  We reviewed cell anatomy first, then drew an animal cell on our notes from last class.  We read pages 25 - 30 and completed page 31 # 1-6. in sentences.  These are due on Monday.  We watched the last 5 minutes of this clip about cell structure and function.

Chemistry 11:  After reviewing the answer key for yesterday's KMT WS, we took brief note on Chemistry and viewed 14 sample of matter, describing their physical properties.  In the second half, we read sections 1.3 to 1.6 and completed the Safety Map.  We looked up WHMIS symbols on the web and sketched/labelled them on the back of the map.  Due next class are all your supplies (see your outline for a complete list), the safety map, and the WHMIS symbols. Everyone received their pink periodic tables today.

Science 8:  We looked at a list of safety rules and categorized them according to 4 different categories - this was completed on the back of the DIY safety map from yesterday.  We then learned about the parts of cells, took brief notes, and watched this clip.  We labelled cell anatomy on this WS and colored each part a different color.  In the final minutes, we discussed expectations (maybe you call these "rules"), just out of formality, because everyone seems to know how to succeed in our class already without being told:).  Next class I will want to check your supplies (pencils, pens, calculator, ruler, binder, paper, textbook, protractor).

Chemistry 11:  After reviewing the materials you'll need for this course, we went straight into the Kinetic Molecular Theory with a demo and small assignment (KMT WS).  This animation helped us with our learning.  We fetched textbooks from the library as well.  In the final 20 minutes we read section 1.1 in our Hebdon Text and completed the map as prescribed in the text.  I checked for signed outlines.  Due next class is the KMT WS and the classroom/hallway/fire escape map. 

Science 8:  We reveiwed the tools you will need to learn in Science 8, then we went through all the classroom safety equipment (fire extinguisher, fire blanket, fume hood, emergency gas shut-off button, eye-wash, emergency shower, and eyewear drawer).  We constructed a full-page map showing all this equipment, as well as the nearest fire pull, nearest fire extinguisher, and fire exit route.  After signing out textbooks from the library, we read pages xviii and xix in the pre-text section.  To finish, we spoke about many of the ways to become involved in the culture of our school (arts, sports, volunteerism, etc).

Science 8:  Texts were handed in, then I collected the Practice Final Exam.  We wrote our Final Exam at 9:00, and it took a little over one hour on average.  Those that finished early constructed a paper model of a trilobite (an important index fossil). Chemistry 12:    For year-end review we worked with a partner and recited a few lists to each other [5 ways too slow down a reaction, 5 ways to measure the rate of a reaction, 4 phases from fastest to slowest reacting, 6 strong acids, 3 strong bases, the complete list of hydrolysis spectators, a list of common catalysts].  We completed the Titration Summary assigment, then worked on the Electrochemistry Practice Test.  On Friday we will do an electrochemistry Unit Test.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

Science 8:   We reviewed finding relative age first, then we did Activity 12E to learn how index fossils can help us find the relative ages of sedimentary strata.  We looked at pictures of glaciated landscapes and learned the names of features caused by erosion, weathering, and deposition.  The Deposition section from Friday's placemat was completed as we read pages 394 & 395, then we started the Glaciation WS.  Only 12E is due Wednesday.  Geology test on Friday. Science 8:    We went through page 508 answers partially, then we all handed in our page 508 complete assignment after reviewing rocks and rock families.  We completed Lab 17A (Clocking Tectonic Plates), then we wrote brief notes on Volcanos.  In the last 15 minute we watched National Geographic Volcano!, a documentary about the late volcano chasers, the Krafts.   Only Lab 17A is due on Friday (all procedure, and Analysis a - d in sentences.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Tuesday, June 3rd.

Science 8:    We marked the WS "Getting to know the Plate Boundaries".  We spent time completing page 508 # 1-13, then we reviewed the rock families and sketched our own Rock Cycle.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.  Now is a good time to begin studying for your final exam on June 17th.

Science 10:  We had Kolby, a recruiter from Lethbridge Polytechnic, here to speak about post secondary programs.  We also watched part of this clip and discussed how advancing in career, artistic pursuits, and other long term development requires one to simply get started, even if the correct direction is uncertain.  Once you've started, its important to be observant,  thoughtful, and hardworking.  This creates opportunity and can lead to new directions, new opportunity, and a feeling of accomplishment. Science 8:  A few minutes were spent looking at our plate boundary maps finding places such as New Zealand, Iceland, the Great Rift Valley in Africa, and the Scotia Plate.  We watched this clip after reviewing plate tectonics, the read section 11.1 in our textbook and completed the Plate Boundaries WS, which is due next class.  In the final minutes we reviewed rock families and began piecing together the way that rocks cycle from one familiy to the Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Science 10:  We reviewed sexual reproduction in flowers first, then used Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection to explain how a skunk cabbage might have changed to smell like rotting meat and have remarkably large leaves.  We finished the Replacements Lab, and this was handed in (if not, ensure that it is ready to hand in Monday morning).  In the final minutes we began page 63 # 1-8.

Science 8:  After reviewing the layers of the earth we watched this clip that explains the mechanism for continental drift.  We wrote brief notes on a prepared cross section of tectonic plates, read 17. 4 from a hand-out, and completed page 508 # 1-13 in sentences. This is due Monday.  This clip shows how mountains can form from converging plates.  In the final minutes we reviewed a little of the Periodic Table.

Chemistry 12:  We did the WS titled Minireview of 5.9, then we tried some problems where we had to make our own mini reduction tables.  Due Monday are U5 # 14-16 and 37-41.  Prepare Lab 21C for next week, and spend some time reviewing the rates unit.

Science 8:  We started with some speed calculations.  We completed Lab 13F from a handout, to learn how earthquake data can help us understanding the structure of the Earth.  After writing brief notes on the Layers of the Earth, we drew a scale diagram of a cross section of the earth ( 1cm = 1000 km).  In the last part of the class we learned about 3 families of rocks:  Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic.  After creating a brief table to compare the 3 types of rocks, we watched this clip about rock families.    Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log. 

Chemistry 12:    We learned how to balance full redox reactions, and we completed 8 problems from Unit 5 # 24.  In the second half we wrote brief notes on Electrochemical Cells, then we read sections 5.8 and 5.9 and completed U5 # 34-37.  This clip shows how electrochemical cells are made in factories.  We spoke about chemical engineers, structural engineers, civil engineers, millwrights, and machinists.  All the textbook questions are due Friday.  Spare time was spent preparing Lab 21C, our final lab.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

 Science 10:  After going through the Giraffe WS, we watched this clip about natural selection.   We read pages 50 - 54, and wrote brief notes as we read.  We made a place mat with 14 rows, one for each paragraph in the reading, and students were asked to write one key idea for each paragraph.  Science 10:  We had a short discussion about natural selection, and how populations can change over time.  We wrote brief notes on Natural Selection, then we read a short article and completed the Giraff WS.  We also spoke about how final exams are three weeks away and that now is a good time to do some review from the start of the course.

Science 8:  We got our friends who went on the band trip caught up by completing the Epicenter location activity, then starting the Pangaea cut and paste from the USGS.  Science 8 students who were here last week spent the time completing their business letter from Friday.

Chemistry 12:  We started the day with a short review WS on sections 5.1 to 5.3, then time was provided to complete all the Qs and FUQs from Lab 21D.   We finished off with balancing half reactions.   



 Friday, May 23rd

Chemistry 12:  We used the Table of Reductions to determine if several proposed reactions were spontaneous or not.  After reading section 5.3 we completed U5 # 7-14, which is due on Monday.  Remaining time was spent completing Lab 21D - the questions and follow-up questions will be due Tuesday.  

Science 10:  We began by reviewing the structure of DNA and how proteins are made by ribosomes in the nucleus.  Everyone was given a gene sequence, then we transcribed the DNA sequence into an mRNA sequence, then translated the protein by using the Codon chart and writing the order of the amino acids.  We caused a few mutations - one that caused a slight change, and another that caused a catastrophic change.  We worked on two genetics review practice quizzes and answer keys were provided for checking your work.  This clip shows how populations change through time.  Spend some time reviewing for your favorite final exam.

Science 8:  We practiced locating an epicenter on a map again, to get really good at it, then we started to write a business letter, but this is not due Monday.

Science 8:  We started with a short review of Seismology (focus, epicenter, seismograph, seisomogram, P & S waves), then we practiced drawing perfect circles with a compass.  We used this data to find the epicenter on the map found on page 2.   This video clip explains it quite well.  In the second half we learned about the idea of Continental Drift.  We read this article and completed the tables found within the article.  We also completed the cut and paste found at the end of the article to make a map of Pangea.   All instructions are written on the cut and paste page.   On your completed Pangaea map ensure that you have a clear title at the top, a key to show the colors and fossil names, and label the two ancient waterbodies (Tethys Sea and Panthallasic Ocean).  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Science 10:  We started with brief notes on Protein Synthesis, and we used our Codon Chart on our databooklet to create a protein from the sequence of bases in a gene.  Read this article to learn about protein synthesis.  We watched this clip about proteins being made in the cyctoplasm.  Next we reviewed human female and male reproductive anatomy by completing a WS, reading section 16.4 from the old Probe 10, and completing Review 16. 4 # 1-7 (in high quality point form).  16.4, as well as page 153 # 1-25 in the old Bio 11 Text are due next class.  Also, next day we will have a quiz on reproductive anatomy.  In the last 15 minutes we discussed mutations, and how they can be beneficial, neutral, or harmful.  This clip shows how enzymes are used to limit mutations in DNA.  Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

Science 10:  We completed the Genetics Review WS, then we learned about Protein Synthesis.  We performed an amazing one act play, with terrific actors such as our Ribosome Connor or the three tRNA's Aidan, Gwen, and Ivo.  The mRNA strand and DNA strands were particularly skillful at ensuring accurate base pairing.  This clip shows a clear animation of Protein synthesis.  Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log

Science 8:  Today we wrote the Cells and Systems test, then we spent time finishing Activities 11E and 11F (on Seismology) from the old Science Probe 9.  We finished by naming all the mountain peaks visible from the fields at RSS:  Begbie, MacPherson, Boulder, Kirkup, Copeland, Frisby, Mt.  Science 10:  We completed a practice genetics quiz after going through the Genetics WS from Tuesday, then we read pages 33-38 and completed page 39 # 1-11 (half in sentences).   We also found all the genotypes in Figures 2,3,and 4 on the Pedigree Lab WS.  In the second half we hand a discussion about variation, and we started the Variation mini lab.  We measured Scarlet Runner Bean seed length, and plotted number vs length.   Here is our data:  Plot a Number v Length using bar graph format.  No work is due on Tuesday - you will be given some time to finish the above items.
