Science 10:  We reviewed endo and exothermic reactions first, then learned how to use the Heat equation to determine how much energy is gained by material when it is heated.  The Thermal Energy WS was completed first, then time was provided to finish page 147 # 1-7.  We then completed the Calorimetry Lab (all procedure and all questions). Chemistry 12:  To start we wrote brief notes on Le Chatelier's Principle and read section 2.4.  Due next class are Unit 2 # 14-16 as well as 17-27 (odds only for this part).We spent time completing Lab 19B, which is due on Monday.    We found time to learn about the Equilibrium Constant too, and Unit 2 # 31 - 35 were added to your assignment.   Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

Science 8:    We started by going over the answers to page 147 and this was checked. We worked on the Waves WS, and this is due next class.   The Chemistry Unit Test was completed today. We took brief notes on Visible Spectrum and watched this clip that shows how white light contains all the colors (ROYGBIV). This clip shows how Isaac Newton demonstrated that white light is made of ROYGBIV components.  We started page 151 # 2-10, but this is not due.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Chemistry 12:  We completed the procedure for Lab 19B today.  We also discussed the pattern that some chemicals react to completion, some don't react, and some form equilibrium systems.  Question #1 from Lab 19B is a good item to complete, but don't move on to #2 until your values have been checked.  Read section 2.3 from Hebdon and complete Unit 2 # 14-16.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

Science 8:    We reviewed atomic theory first, and discussed how isotopes are atoms of a particular element that differ by the number of neutrons in their nucleus.  This video shows how chemists collide atoms in cyclotrons to make larger atoms.  We have our own small accelerator, in Vancouver, called TRIUMF.  We wrote the Chemistry Practice Test today - it is due tomorrow.  Chemistry test on Wednesday.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Science 10: After marking a portion of the Precipitations Mini Lab WS it was handed in.  We took brief notes on Energy Changes in Chemical Reactions, then read pages 140 - 145 in our textbooks.  Everyone was encouraged to check the answer key for the Chemistry Practice Test.  Due on Tuesday is page 147 # 1-7.  Next class,Monday, we will have a test on the Chemistry Unit, but today's topic will not be on the test.   Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

Science 8:  We marked a portion of page 208 # 2, 5-7, 12, 13 and 212 # 5,  then it was handed in.  Everyone was assigned an atom with a specific mass number and we made posters of models of these atoms.  The poster was collected at the end of our class.  Next week on the double block we will have a test on the Chemistry Unit.  A Practice Test will be given out on Monday.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Chemistry 12:  To begin we reviewed mechanisms by looking at the destruction of ozone by chlorine radicals that was happening in the 80s and 90s.  Good thing for governments that make rules - we no longer worry about ozone depletion because the harmful chemicals, CFCs, have been largely discontinued.  This video showed how Catalytic Converters use Pt and Pd catalysts to clean up exhaust gases in gasoline vehicles.  Another example of governments making rules to change the practice of manufactures.  We wrote brief notes on Dynamic Equilibrium, then we read sections 2.1 and 2.2.  We completed Unit 2 # 1-13.  If there was time, Lab 19B can be prepared.  Next class we will have a test on Rates of Reaction (Unit 1).  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log

Science 8:  We started by looking at video of Lab 10-3, showing steps 9 and 10.  We learned about what is inside an atom, and a little about how electrons and protons were discovered.  After writing brief notes on Atomic Structure, we did page 208 #2, 5-7 and page 212 # 5 & 10 - these are from a handout.   In the second half we learned about frequency (calculated by dividing the number of cycles by the number of seconds).  We determined the frequency of steps in Usain Bolt's world record 100 m race in Berlin n 2009.  We practiced a few more problems, then made a pendulum and determined the frequency.  Chemistry test on Tuesday.   Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.




Wednesday, February 19th

Science 10: After a short review we completed the Precipitations Mini-Lab and Worksheet.    We spent a little time working on the Chemistry Unit Practice Test and checking the answers with the posted answer key.  On Monday we will have a test on all we have learned so far this semester.  In the final 40 minutes we wrote brief notes on Energy, then read pages 198 - 205 in our textbook.  We worked on the Energy WS.  Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

 Science 8:  After a short review I collected the Density Mini Review WS and we did the procedure for Lab 10-3.  This short clip will show you what procedure steps 9 and 10 looked like.  The Analysis questions are not due Thursday.

Science 10:  I asked for additional page 175 # 1,4-6, 8 assignments from last week.  We did Lab 23:  A Neutralization Reaction today, including Analysis Questions 1-5b.  These are due next class. Time will be provided for the Chemistry Practice Test next class too, and we will have a Chemistry Unit Test on Friday.  

Chemistry 12:  We completed the Rates Problems Involving Stoichiometry WS today, and the key was posted at the side.  I collected Rates Practice Tests too, and marked the Written Response section, then gave them back.  Click here to see the MC answers.  Rates Test on Friday.

Thursday, February 13th

Science 8:  We reviewed density by determining the density of paper (we used our textbook, a nice brick of paper).  The heating curve graph from Tuesday was handed in.  We completed the Density Mini Review WS, which is due on Tuesday.  To prepare for Lab 10-3 on Tuesday, we made kits of saline solutions with different concentrations.  We read pages 368 - 371 in our textbooks, then completed page 375 # 1-11 in sentences.  Click here to see the Sci8 assignment log.

Chemistry 12: Today we started with a quiz on Unit 1 # 54 - 61.  Time was given to finish Unit 1 problems (so far we have done # 1-61, but not 33). Time was given to finish Lab 18C, which was handed in.  The Rates Practice Test was given out today too, and we will have a test on Unit 1 on Thursday, February 20th.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.



Wednesday, February 12th

Science 10: We started with Balancing Minipractice C, and self checked our work.  We took brief notes on the 6 categories of chemical reactions.  We read pages 165 - 171 in our textbook, then completed page 175 # 1,4-6, and 8.  We watched Vaitea Cowan on TED, speaking about Hydrogen fuel which may reduce atmospheric Carbon Dioxide if we can avoid using fossil fuels to make it.   The Chemistry Practice Test was worked on during the final portion of our class.  Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

Chemistry 12: Today we learned how to draw Potential Energy graphs for reaction Mechanisms after starting with the Mechanisms Mini Practice WS.  We read sections 1.10 to 1.12 and completed Unit 1 # 54 - 61.  We also watched "Deconstructed: Catalytic Converter".  Lab 18C is due Thursday.   Click here to see the Lab Marking Guide.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

Science 10: We started with Balancing Minipractice B, and self checked our work.  This animation shows how atoms and molecules just change their partnerships during a chemical reaction, and that no atoms are made or destroyed.  This means that the total mass in any chemical reaction must remain constant.  We read pages 125 - 130 in our textbook, then completed page 135 # 1,4,5,7,8.  A little time was given to finish Lab 8.1   Click here to see the Sci10 assignment log.

Science 8:  We marked a portion of page 192  # 1, 3-7, and 9, then it was handed in.  We watched the Periodic Table of Videos: Mercury clip.  Time and temperature data for the heating of a mystery yellow solid was provided, and everyone drew a graph of Temperature vs Time to determine the mp and bp.  The graph is due Thursday.  Remaining time was spent on the Measurement WS . Monday, February 10th

Chemistry 12:  We completed the WS titled "Short Review of 1.1 to 1.8", and used the key check it.  We read section 1.9 to learn about reaction mechanisms, and watche the first 3 minutes of Reaction Mechanisms on the Khan Academy.  Unit 1 # 46 - 52 was completed, and the rest of the time was spent on lab 18C.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

 Chemistry 12:  First we reviewed the graphs for Lab 18C and discussed how room temperature curve is roughly half as steep as the 30C  curve.  For slow reactions, chemists think that a 10C increase in temperature results in a doubling of the reaction rate.   We took brief notes on Collision Theory, then we read sections 1.7 and 1.8.  We completed Unit 1 # 29 - 45, which are due Monday.  Lab 18C is due Thursday.  Click here to see the Ch12 assignment log.

 Science 8:  We learned how to determine the density of a substance by first finding its mass and volume, then using the density equation (d = m/v).  We found the density of a metal, an non-metal solid,  water, and a mystery liquid.  No work is due on Wednesday.  

Science 10:  We read pages 202 to 208 in the old Probe 10 textbook to learn about acids, bases, and salts.  We created a miniposter to show our understanding, and at the end we did a mini fun quiz to identify acids, bases, and salts from various types of data.

Chemistry 12:  We went to the Scholarship Presentation in the RPAC today, and the remaining time was spent preparing Lab 18C.  Due Wednesday is Unit 1 # 1-28.  Also, read the procedure and Pre-Lab discussion for Lab 18C, so you are prepared for your lab on Wednesday morning.
