Science 9:    We reviewed biomolecules and wrote brief notes on Energy flow through Trophic Levels.  After reading pages 312 - 316 we completed an  assignment  from this hand out, # 2,4,6-12.  Mr. Gale marked part of this Energy WS while everyone worked.  Only the Energy WS is due Tuesday.    Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  After a short review of frequency we wrote brief notes on Light.  We watched this clip that showed how white light contains all the colors of the ROYGBIV colors.  This clip uses the particle model of light to explain refraction.  Due next class is page 151 # 1-10, half in sentence format.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Science 9:    We spoke about a food chain that can be found in Williamson's Lake:  phytoplankton, tadpole, Dragonfly nymph, frog, Heron.  We learned about producers and consumers, and reviewed the biomolecules that are passed from one level to the next.  We looked at 5 food labels and found the percentage by mass of fats, proteins, and carbohydrates in each one.  Following this we wrote brief notes on Energy, ready pages 312 to 315, and completed this Energy WS.  All this is due Monday.  Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  We reviewed how to calculate frequency, then we learned the difference between longitudinal and transverse waves.   After reading pages 134 - 138 we completed page 143 # 1-7 in quality point form.  Page 143 and the Wave Measurement WS are due on Monday.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Science 9:  We started with bird names, then we into local tree species.  We took brief notes on C atoms cycling between the atmosphere and biosphere.  After reading pages 300 - 305 we did page 307 # 1-9 in sentences.   Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

Wednesday& Thursday Feb 25/26

Science 9:  I collected the practice tests again, then we completed the Chemistry Unit Test.  Following this we reviewed local bird species (flicker, chickadee, junco, creeper, nuthatch, western tanager, cedar waxwing) and also some local food chains.  We took brief notes on the Atmosphere after watching Felix Baumgartner fall through 40 km of atmosphere.  We read the National Geographic Article on the Atmosphere and completed a few tasks on the back of the handout.   Period BF was able to watch this Paul Nicklen TED talk on the Polar Ice Biome.   Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

 Science 9:  I collected the practice test and marked it while everyone read pages 282 - 287 and completed a short placemat exercise on the 4 spheres.  This is due Friday.  We identified 6 local bird species:  flickers, chickadees, creepers, western tanagers, waxwings, and kestrels.   In the last 10 minutes we went through some of the more challenging parts of the Chemistry practice test.  Next day we will have a unit test on the Chemistry Unit.  Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

Science 9:  After marking page 170 # 1,2 it was handed in and we received our quizzes back from Friday.  The Environmental Science Unit was introduced with a short discussion about the 4 spheres that are involved in biogeochemical cycling:  Hydrosphere, Atmosphere, Lithosphere, and the  Biosphere.    We then completed the Chemistry Practice Test, which is due Tuesday.  Your Chemistry test will be on the Double block day this week.  Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

Science 8:   We reviewed atomic structure, then made a poster showing the atomic structure of a specific atom.  Everyone was assigned a unique atom.  This is due on Wednesday.

Science 9:   To begin we marked page 163 and 165 from last class.  We completed 10 more practice problems where we had to name or write formulas for ionic compounds.  To learn about Covalent Compounds we read pages 168 - 173 and did the practice problems # 1,2 on page  which are made of molecules.  In the last 10 minutes we did a quiz on naming ionic compounds.    Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

 Science 9:  After reviewing Ionic and Covalent Compounds we practiced writing the names and formulas for ionic compounds.  We read pages 156 - 161 and completed Practice Problems #1-3 on Page 161, which is due next class.   We also started a crossword puzzle, but this is not due next class  Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

Science 8:   We reviewed heating curve graphs to start, then we completed an assignment on Elements - from a hand-out we did page 192 # 1, and 3-9.  In the final minutes we began to learn about the structure of atoms and looked at a Cathode Ray Tube.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Science 8:   We completed a second heating curve graph - this one was for a mystery yellow substance.  Following this we reviewed density and prepared our kits for Lab 10-3 for next Tuesday.  In the last part we began learning about Elements and the periodic table.  A number of samples were placed around the side counter and we observed them and recorded their name, symbol, atomic number, and physical properties.    We finished with the beginning of this short clip about Gold.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

  Science 9:  We finished Lab 8.1 by completing a fill-in-the-blank Conclusion.  Note the style of writing:  mini essay style, written in third person, the purpose is addressed, etc.  After Lab 8.1 was handed in, we wrote brief notes on Ionic Compounds, then we read pages 140 - 143.  Using a hand-out,  we completed # 3-8, 10, 11, and 14 on our own paper in quality point form, and this is due next day.  Page 133 # 1-9 is not yet due.   Click here to see the Science 9 Assignment Log.

Science 8:  We began by going through page 249 # 1-5, then we heated some materials to observe their thermal expansion.    A bimetallic strip bends when heated, and liquids expand when heated, and these behaviors are what makes a thermometer work.  We measured the air temperature as well as the temperature of tap water.  After reading pages 250 and 251 we completed the Temperature WS.  I checked all of your supplies today:  binder, calculator, ruler, paper, pens/pencils, textbook.  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

Science 9:  We began by going over the Volume WS and reviewing key ideas about safety and elements.  After measuring a specific volume of water (it had to be a perfect square)  in a graduated cylinder, we wrote brief note on the Chemistry.  We read pages 102 to 109 and completed page 95 # 1-3 and page 115 # 4-7, both are due Monday.  Also on Monday, I would like to check your supplies (pencils/pens, calculator,  ruler, binder, paper, graph paper (20 sheets), & textbook).

Science 8:  We began by going over the Volume WS and reviewing key ideas about safety and measurement.  After measuring a specific volume of water (it had to be a multiple of 9)  in a graduated cylinder, we wrote brief note on the Chemistry.  We read pages 252 - 253 and completed page 253 # 1-4 and page 249 # 1-4; both are due Monday.  Also on Monday, I would like to check your supplies (pencils/pens, calculator,  ruler, binder, paper, & textbook).

Science 8:  After a review of density, states of matter, and relative age, we did Lab 12E from a hand-out.  We ordered a number of index fossils from youngest to oldest, creating a "geological column".  In the final minutes we watched a little more of National Geographic "Volcano" and spoke about preparing for your final exam (memorize class notes, redo portions of assignments, arrange a quizfest with a friend).  Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

Science 8:  For about 30 minutes we reviewed cells, viruses, immune system, digestive system, and respiratory system.  Studying for your final exam involves working through your binder, and trying to remember the language, skills, and ideas that we learned about.  We then finished the Volcano Notes, and added a table for recording Volcano Names and Hazards.  We watched National Geographic Volcano! for 28:00, then we did Lab 17A Clocking Tectonic Plates.  Ms Weber was kind enough to create a package of condensed notes for studying - be sure to thank her for this.  No work is due for Friday.   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log.

 Science 8:   We started with a short look at the time table and a review of geology & biology, then we handed in page 508 # 3-10, 12 and 13 in fine sentences.  We discussed the rock cycle again, showing how one rock family can change into another family through heating/weathering/erosion/deposition/compaction.  Everyone drew their own rock cycle, then we wrote brief notes on Plate Tectonics.  Science 8:   We wrote brief notes on the structure of the Earth, then we read pages 402 tp 407 in our textbook.  We constructed a scale diagram of the Earth's Layers and we completed Page 413 # 1-4 and 9.  In the second half we learned about plate tectonics and watched this clip.  We labelled a cross section diagram of a divergent and convergent boundary and read section 17.4 in the old Science Probe 10.   Click here to see the Science 8 Assignment Log

 Science 8:   We began by reviewing local mountain names, then a few speed problems.  We discussed the layers of the earth and how people figured out how the layers are arranged.  Lab 13E, which shows how seismology reveals the Earth's layers, was completed and is due on Wednesday morning. Science 8:  We began with a review of continents, oceans, islands, and mountain ranges and the Pangaea Cut and Paste was returned to you.   Then we learned how to calculate speed (also called velocity) with few examples.  This article explains Wegener's evidence for continental drift, and we completed all of the tables within the article after we read it.  With extra time we finished Lab 10D, including the discussion questions # 1-5.  This video is for Tuesday.  

Chemistry 11:  We started with look at the calendar and spoke about how starting final exam review now is a good idea.  We reviewed some key terms, then worked with a partner to draw some molecules and name them.  We learned how to draw and name cyclic hydrocarbons too, then completed Unit 10 # 15 and 16 to sharpen our skills.  Ensure to draw the molecule and stated its name for each problem, and include all the hydrogens so that each C atoms has 4 bonds.
